colophon
a publisher’s logo.
colophon (II)
an inscription placed at the end of a book or manuscript usually with facts relative to its production.
advance galley proofs
preliminary versions of a book meant for review by authors, editors, and proofreaders. Created for proofreading purposes, but may also be used for promotional and review purposes. Today the term 'uncorrected proof' is more common as a term than galley proof.
advance readers copy (ARC)
free copies of a book provided, as a marketing tool, by publishers to booksellers, journalists. These are used to generate blurbs that will later be added to the cover.
permission fees
a fee paid to the holder of copy right for a text in return for the rights to use a part of the text.
serial rights
the rights to print part of a work before publication.
front matter
material that appears in the first section of a book, including half-title page, title page, copyright page, dedication, acknowledgements, etc. These pages come before the first pages of the book and are usually numbered (though not labeled) in roman numerals. Page numbering in Arabic numbers begins with the first actual page of the text or a section title.

preorders for a book.
offset printing
a printing technique in which the inked image is transferred (or "offset") from a plate to a rubber blanket, then to the printing surface. Compared to other printing methods, offset printing is best suited for economically producing large volumes of high quality prints.
typography
the style, arrangement, or appearance of typeset matter.
typeface
a particular design of type.
font
an assortment or set of type or characters all of one style and sometimes one size.
punchcutting
the craft of cutting letter punches in steel from which matrices were made for type founding in the letterpress era. Cutting punches and casting type was the first step of traditional typesetting. The cutting of letter punches was a highly skilled craft requiring much patience and practice. Often the designer of the type would not be personally involved in the cutting.
typographer
a person who specializes in the design, choice, and arrangement of type.
book designer
a person who incorporates the content, style, format, design, and sequence of the various components of a book into a coherent whole.
