What is Eunuchoidism?
In some individuals, puberty is delayed even though the gonads are present and other endocrine functions are normal. In males, this is called eunuchoidism. In females it is called primary amenorrhea.
What is PSA?
The prostate produces and secretes into the semen and the bloodstream a 30-kDa serine protease generally called Prostate specific antigen.
What is the function of PSA?
PSA hydrolyzes the sperm motility inhibitor semenogelin in semen, and it has several substrates in plasma, but its precise function in the circulation is unknown.
What is the significance of an elevated PSA?
This occurs in prostate cancer and is widely used as a screening test for this disease, though PSA is also elevated in benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostatitis.
Normal menstrual blood is predominantly arterial. TRUE/FALSE
TRUE. 25% of the blood is of venous origen. It contains tissue debris, prostaglandins and large amounts of fibrinolysin from endometrial tissue.
Why will fibrinolysin lyse a clot?
So menstrual blood does not normally contain clots unless the flow is excessive.
What is the usual duration of menses?
3-5 days, yet this can vary quite a bit depending on the individual.
How much blood is normally lost at menses?
It may range from slight spotting to 80ml. The average amount is about 30ml. More than 80ml is abnormal. Bleeding can depend on disease, medications and the tissue endometrium.
