How is OCD explained by genes |
Genetically it has been shown that certain Gene combinations for people more at risk of developing OCD this is known as the diathesis stress model. Certain Gene variations can cause difficulty producing or producing too much serotonin in the system this is one explanation of OCD |
|
How does the neural explanation explain OCD |
It explains that short amount of neurotransmitters can result in OCD. For example too little serotonin in the system may affect mental processes leading to hoarding and OCD. It is also been stated the abnormalities in the brain such as the frontal lobes and the parahippocampel gyrus (helps to cope with bad emotions)can cause OCD |
|
Give one of evaluation of the genetic explanation of OCD |
It seems that our environment can also trigger the increased risk of developing OCD. It has been found that OCD patients who had a traumatic events have severe OCD than those with no traumatic event. This suggest OCD who cannot be entirely genetic in origin. However the theory copes for this with the introduction of the diathesis stress model. |
|
Give another evaluation of the genetic explanation of OCD |
There is evidence the genes cause OCD. Research on twins has helped prove this. For example identical twins have a closer correlation of having OCD opposed to none identical twins with a lower correlation of having OCD. This strongly suggest OCD is caused by genetic influences |
|
Give one of evaluation of the neural explanation of OCD |
There is evidence to support the role of neural mechanisms in OCD. For example some antidepressants work purely on the serotonin system increasing the levels of this neurotransmitter. These drugs reduce the symptoms of OCD. As well as this OCD symptoms relate to other forms of conditions for example Parkinson's Disease. This suggests that the biological processes that cause the symptoms in those conditions are also responsible for OCD. |
|
Give another evaluation point of the neural explanation of OCD |
Although research supports that the serotonin system is linked to OCD researchers also identified other systems that can be involved in OCD however no single system has ever been present in every OCD patient. We cannot therefore claim to understand the neural mechanisms involved in OCD |
