Self Report |
In depth investigations of a single person, group, event or community. Data is gathered from a variety of sources by using several different methods e.g interviews. |
|
Strengths |
- Provides detailed (qualitative) information
- Provides insight for further research.
- Permitting investigation of otherwise impractical situations. |
|
Limitations |
- Can't generalise the results to wider population
- Researchers' own subjective feeling may influence the self report (researcher bias)
- Difficult to replicate
- Time consuming |
|
Types of Interviews |
Structured and Unstructured. |
|
Structured Interview. |
Set questions/ standardised order and the interviewer can't deviate from the interview schedule or probe beyond the answers received. |
|
Structured Interview. |
Set questions/ standardised order and the interviewer can't deviate from the interview schedule or probe beyond the answers received. |
|
Strengths of Structured Interviews |
- Easy to replicate as a fixed set of close questions are used, which are easier to quantify > RELIABLE |
|
Structured Interview. |
Set questions/ standardised order and the interviewer can't deviate from the interview schedule or probe beyond the answers received. |
|
Strengths of Structured Interviews |
- Easy to replicate as a fixed set of close questions are used, which are easier to quantify > RELIABLE
- Quick to conduct which means that many interviews can take place within a short amount of time. > LARGE SAMPLE |
|
Limitations of Structured Interview. |
- Not flexible, no new questions can be asked impromptu
- The answers lack detail as only closed questions are asked. Research won't explain why a person behaves in a certain way.
|
|
Unstructured Interviews. |
Informal interview, contain open questions that can be asked in any order. Questions can be added and/or missed during the interview. |
|
Strengths Of Unstructured Interviews. |
- More flexible as questions can be adapted and changes depending on the participants answers.
- Unstructured interviews generate qualitative data through the use of open questions.
- Increased Validity. |
|
Limitations of Unstructured interviews. |
- It can be time consuming to conduct an unstructured interview and analyse the qualitative data.
