What is nominal level data?

Categories of behaviour and how often they occur, data that can be categorised

What is ordinal data?

Data that can be ordered to ranked

What is interval level data?

Data in actual measurements and shows differences. A a rule of thumb is that if a machine can be used to measure the dependent variable such as blood pressure or a clock the data is most likely ordinal

What is quantitative data?

Numerical data

What is a strength of quantitative data?

Allows us to easily make comparisons between participants and convert into other methods of analysis

What is a weakness of quantitative data?

We cannot see the true meaning behind the participant's behaviour

What is qualitative data?

Detailed, descriptive data in words

What is a strength of qualitative data?

Allows us to see in depth what a participant did and how they were feeling if collected correctly

What is a weakness of qualitative data?

Harder to compare data

What is primary data?

Data that is collected through a psychologist's own work, data they collect themselves.

What is an advantage of using primary data?

The data is collected to specifically inform the psychologist's research so it is well suited to the research question, hypothesis or aim

What is a disadvantage of using primary data?

It may be difficult to collect, harder to collect or a psychologist may not be able to collect it. For example, it may be very difficult to collect primary data on split brain patients like Sperry did because there are little to no split brain patients in the world

What is secondary data?

Data that the psychologist has not collected themselves

What is the main advantage of secondary data?

Data that would otherwise be impossible or too expensive to collect can be accessed and because the data was collected in the past it can be used to compare to the present day

What is the main disadvantage of secondary data?

The data may not have been collected in a valid or reliable way and there may have been extraneous variables so the researcher cannot be sure that it is valid or reliable
