Aim

A general statement of what the researcher intends to investigate.

Hypothesis

Precise testable statement that states the relationship between the variables to be investigated.

One-Tailed Hypothesis / Directional

Hypothesis that predicts the out come of the experiment.

Two-Tailed Hypothesis / Non-Directional

Hypothesis that does not predict the out come of the experiment.

Experiment

An independent variable is manipulated while others are controlled, to see effects on a dependent variable.

Naturalistic Observation

Taking advantage of a naturally occuring situation by watching and documenting behaviour, as it occurs.

Structured Observation

Observing behavior and recording it systematically, normally with the aid of categories. (Quantitative Data)

Un-Structured Observation

Observing behavior and recording what they see as they see it without categorization. (Qualitative Data)

Structured Interview

Pre-determined set of questions are asked in a fixed order. Similar to a questionnaire but generally face to face.

Un-Structured Interview

Similar to conversation the interview has no set questions but has a general aim/topic.

Questionnaire

A series of predetermined questions asked to participants to gather information.

Survey

Method of collecting information or data through the use of questions. Self-reported data.

Correlation

Use of a scattergram to show the strength and direction of an association between two or more co-variables.
