Tourette's Syndrome
-Nuerological disorder characterized by repetitive, stereotyped, involuntary movements and vocalizations called tics.
-tics are simple(eye blinking, facial grimacing and head or shoulder jerking)or complex (combination of two or more simple tics,sniffing and hopping or jumping)
-Medications used to treat it are neuroleptics.
-diagnosed by having tics for at least a year, MRI, CT scans and EEG's.

Alzheimer's Disease
-cognitive disease - affects the brain and the mental capacities of a person.
- Nerve cells in the brain die
- three stages- early(learning, memory, thinking and planning) Mild or moderate(speaking and speech understanding and awareness of things around you) Advanced (unable to recognize faminly members, access memories and are dependant on others)
-It is fatal and there currently is no cure
-affects women more frequently then men
-onset usually around 55 to 60 years of age.
Williams Syndrome
-comes from a random genetic mutation (deletion of chromosome 7)
-distinct facial features
-mild to moderate retardation
-learning disabilities
-No cure
-diabetes, cardiovascular disease and loss of hearing are symptoms occuring in adulthood
Autism
-also known as PDD(Pervasive Developmental Disorder)
-diagnosed around the age of 3
-three behaviors observed for diagnosis,1. impaired ability to interact with others socially 2. Impaired communication skills 3. restricted and repetitive stereotyped forms of behavior
-High functioning- capable of living on their own, making a living,supporting and caring for themselves
-Low functioning- live at home or in facilities where their needs can constantly be addressed.
- there is no cure
Trichotillomania
-pulling out of hair from parts of the body.
-anyone can get it
-most of the time it is stressed induced
-hard to treat using drugs
-habit reversal training is the most affective cure
Seasonal Affect Disorder
-People experience normal mental health throughout most of the year, but experience depressive symptoms during the winter or summer.
-believed to be related to light.
-light therapy and medication are used to treat it
Asperger's syndrome
-similar to autism but different in that, there is no delay in language or cognitive development
-normal intellegence,but lack non-verbal skills,fails to demonstrate empathy with their peers and is physically clumsy.
-cause is unknown
Fragile X Syndrome
- genetic disorder
-mutation of the FMR1 gene on the x chromosome
-intelectual disability
-elongated face, large ears, flat feet, enlarged testicles and low muscle tone
-no current cure
Factitious Munchausen syndrome by proxy
-a caregiver who feigns or induces illness in another person
-to gain attention or sympathy from others
-person is not looking to harm the child out of malice, just wants attention
Picks disease
-similar to alzheimer's
-rare disorder that causes the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain, which control speech and personality, to slowly atrophy
-build up of protien in the affected area of the brain
-strikes between the ages of 40-60
-behavior changes-rudeness, impulsivity, obsessive compulsive,poor judgement, withdrawl or seclusion, lack of attention to personal hygene, inability to hold a job and sexual exhibitionism or promiscuity
-difficulty speaking, reduced quality of speech, decreased ability to read or write
-memory loss, weakness, lack of coordination, urinary incontinence, increased muscle rigidity
-onset usually before age 65
-it is terminal
