What is Emotion?

A response that consists of four components. First, you interpret or appraise some stimulus (event, object, or thought) in terms of well-being. Second, you experience a subjective feeling, such as fear or happiness. Third, you have a physiological responses, such as changes in the heart rate or breathing. Forth, you may show observable behaviors, such as smiling or crying.

What is Peripheral Theories of Emotion?

how physiological changes in the body give rise to emotional feelings.

What is Cognitive Appraisal Theory of

Emotions?

How interpretations or appraisals of situations result in emotional feelings.

What is Affective Neuroscience Approach?

The underlying neural bases of mood and emotion by focusing on the brain's neural circuits that evaluate stimuli and produce or contribute to experiencing and expressing different emotional states.

What is the James Lange Theory & It's

Layout?

Our brain interprets specific physiological changes as feeling for emotions and that there is a different physiological pattern underlying each emotion. According to the James Lange Theory, the order for the occurrence of the four components of emotion is 1.) Stimulus triggers different physiologic changes in your body. 2.) Your brain interprets different patterns of physiologic changes. 3.) Different physiologic changes produce different emotions. 4.) You may or may not show observable responses.

Example: James illustrated his theory with the example of seeing a bear: If you see a bear, "you are frightened because you run" rather then run because you are frightened.

What is the Cognitive Appraisal Theory?

Your interpretations or appraisal or thought or memory of a situation, object, or event can contribute to, or result in, your experiencing different emotional states. The sequences are 1.) The stimulus could be an event, object, or a thought: "I won 55 million last week." 2.) Your appraisal or think of what you can do: "I can go on a trip around the world." 3.) Appraising or thinking about what you can do brings feelings of happiness and joy. 4.) You also have physiological responses and observable behaviors.

What Role does the Amygdala have dealing with emotion?

Located in the tip of the brains temporal lobe and receives input from all senses. Using all the sensory input the Amygdala monitors and evaluates whether stimuli have positive or negative emotional significance for our well-being and survival. It is also involved in storing memories that have emotional content.

Example: The Amygdala is an emotional detector. It is like a guard dog that is constantly sniffing for threats which gives us an advantage to survival. Mostly active when we view emotional facial expressions indicating fear or distress. When it is damaged patients often overlook important emotional cues. they identify all faces as being more trustworthy and approachable than the rest of us do. in animals when it is damaged they no longer learn to fear and avoid dangerous situations.

What are the 7 emotions across cultures?

1.) anger

2.) happiness

3.) fear

4.) surprise

5.) disgust

6.) sadness

7.) contempt

Pride, jealousy, and compassion do not have particular facial expressions.

What are the 2 issues with happiness?

Adaptation Level Theory- We quickly become accustomed to receiving some good fortune; we take the good fortune for granted within a short period of time; and contributes less to our long-term level of happiness.

Long Term Happiness is the other.
