Participants?

Volunteer ppts, 40 males between the age of 20-50 within the New Haven area, America, found by an advertisement in a newspaper. Have a range of jobs and social+Eco backgrounds. all male to prevent intersexual abuse reluctance

Procedure?

Setting- Yale uni, ppts were payed $4.50 for participating, grouped with a 47 yr old Mr Wallce (American- Irish actor- confederate) there was fixed lottery making the confederate the 'learner' and the ppt the 'teacher' both went to 'shock generator room' and 'learner' strapped to chair with electrodes attached to front, 'teacher' then given 45v to show eg of equipment, told that shocks cause pain but no lasting damage. Told it was a 'memory game' and had to give q's over intercom to 'learner' if wrong had to give a shock
