How does a CAT Scan work? |
The patient must drink or be injected into the eye with dye. The scan shows where the dye goes. White is bone. Grey is organs or soft tissue. |

What are the uses of a CAT Scan? |
It can be used to detect bleeding in the brain, blood clots, tumours, strokes or diseases of the skull. |

What are the positives of CAT Scans? |
It is quick (30 mins for a full body scan) and you can see the brain tissue better than in x-rays. It has fewer restrictions than a MRI as well as being painless and giving a detailed image. |

What are the negatives of a CAT Scan? |
It can increase the chances of cancer as it gives them background radiation. Therefore, it can't be used on pregnant women. |

How do PET scans work? |
They are injected with FDG attached to glucose. The glucose is absorbed and the FDG breaks down positrons. Gamma rays are released and show areas of activity. |

What are the the uses of a PET scan? |
It shows what areas are functioning effectively and can identify tumours. |

What are the negatives of a PET scan? |
There is a low risk of cancer but pregnant women can't use it. It may have unknown long-term side effects. Patients can't even be allowed around pregnant women or children for the rest of the day. |

How do MRI's work? |
Magnetic pulses are fired at the brain which moves hydrogen atoms. They time how long it takes the hydrogen atoms move back. It forms an image. |

What are the uses of MRI scans? |
It shows schizophrenia and ADHD. It also measures haemoglobin. |

What are the negatives of MRI scans? |
It is expensive and they must be completely still. Also they need heavy sedation and no metal objects. It is difficult for people with claustrophobia. |

What are the positive of MRI scans? |
It has no radiation and is non invasive as well as being able to detect strokes. |
