Consciousness

The process by which the brain creates a mental model of our experience. The most common, or ordinary consciousness occurs during wakefulness, although there can be altered states of consciousness.

A physiological pattern that repeats approximately every 24 hours--such as the sleep--wakefulness cycle.

A stage if sleep that occurs approximately every 90 minutes, marked by burst of rapid eye movements occurring under closed eye lids.

The most common of sleep disorders--involving insufficient sleep, the inability to fall asleep quickly, frequent arousal, or early awakenings.

A drug the arouses the central nervous system, speeding up physical and mental responses. Stimulants normally increase activity level by encouraging communication among neurons in the brain. Stimulants, however have been found to suppress activity level in persons with attention-deficient/hyperactivity disorder.
