Aim
To investigate the relationship between maternal deprivation and affectionless psychopathy
Procedure

case study using 88 children from Bowlby's clinic

44 criminals 44 non with emotional issues

thieves interviewed- assess social conscience - family history examined- experienced prolonged separation from M

control group not interviewed - case history examined -prolonged early separation

Results

B classed 14 out of 44 thieves as affectionless psychopaths vs. 0 of control

12 out of 14 classed as AP experienced prolonged maternal separation before 5 yo compared to 5 of the 30 thieves who were not classified as AP

2 out of the 44 control group had experienced prolonged early separation from their mother

Conclusions
early prolonged separation leads to a lack of emotional development leading to AP- individuals display a lack of concern for others - cannot admit guilt - unable to form meaningful relationships

Define correlation and a limitation when using it for MD

relationship between 2 variables (MD AND AP) -cannot establish cause and effect- only say there is a relationship between level of md and ap

Parental income education and diet were the other factors - could affect behaviour

Why is Bowlby examining the case histories and dsiagnosing ap an issue
investigator expectation - manipulated the data to fit his expectations

Briefly describe what is meant by the term Maternal Deprivation
Prolonged separation from PCG during the CP of life - deprives the child of stable and continuous care and leads to bond disruption and possibly the breaking of attachment bonds

support b

Spitz and Wolf 1946

investigated previously normal S.A children- apathetic and depressed - lack of attention/emotional care and separation from mother whilst in hospital

- after 3 months of separation the attachment bond had been broken

support b

Goldfarb 1947

compared 2 group of of children from war orphanage

1 group fostered within first few months of lives

other group fostered at 3 yo

longer at orphanage= less emotionally mature, more aggressive, performed poorer on IQ tests

Support b

Douglas 1975

longitudinal study

children born in the same week in 1946 tested over 25 years

children who spent more than a week in hospital under 4- behaviour disturbance and poorer reading in adolescence

Against b

Freud and Dann 1951

investigated 6 children whose parents were murdered in holocaust in first few months of life

raised in war camp with little contact

3 years old free-poor language and physical development

hostile to adults - wanted to stay together

developed well emo, socially and linguistically - hard to say if long term effects

Against b

Rutter 1972

challenges MDH

argues privation rather than deprivation

argues some of the children b diagnosed as AP had never had an attachment in the first place

Define privation
occurs when a child has never formed a close relationship e.g. Genie

Define deprivation
when a child has a bond and its broken due to separation e.g. hospitalisation
