What are the types of long term memory? |
Episodic, semantic and procedural |
|
What is Episodic memory? |
Episodic memory refers to our ability to recall events from our lives. This has been likened to a diary, a record of daily happenings |
|
What is semantic memory? |
Our knowledge of the world. This includes facts, but in the broadest sense. Likened to an encyclopedia. Eg: meaning of words and the taste of an orange |

This is our memory for actions or skills or how we do things. We can recall these memories without conscious awareness or a great deal of effort. |
|
What is the role of the central executive? |
A process that monitors incoming data, makes decisions and allocates slave systems to tasks. Very limited processing capacity. |
|
What is the role of the phonological loop? |
Deals with auditory information and preserves the order in which the information arrives. Phonological store - stores words you hear Articulatory control system - repeats sounds in a loop to keep them in working memory while they are needed. |
|
What is the role of the visuo - spatial sketch pad |
Stores visual and spatial information when required. |
|
What is the Episodic buffer? |
Added to the model by baddeley in 2000. Temporary store for information, integrating the visual, spatial and verbal information processed by other stores and maintaining a sense of time sequencing. |
