What are the Structural Model and the Topographical Model?
Structural model of personality - id, ego, super ego

Topographical model of mind - conscious, preconscious, and unconscious
The Id - what is it?
Most primitive & least accessible part of the personality. Where sexual & aggressive insticts are; also the libido; it operates on the basis of the "pleasure principle"

This exists before the other ego functions develop
What is the preconscious?
intermediate zone; where the material is accessible to consciousness w/moderate effort
What is the Ego?
part of Freud's structural model, it negotiates between the demands of the id & the limits of the external world; it operates on the basis of the "Reality Principle"

Derives motive power from the id
What is the Superego?
"over I" is a kind of internalized parental voice that is formed in early childhood. It is a response to the rules & reinforcements provided by parents & other caretakers
What is the Primary Process
Developed by Freud, this type of thinking produces images of instant wish-fulfillment in the absence of real-world gratification to reduce tension. Since wish fulfillment is imaginary this only results in a temporary reduction in tension

Child becomes jealous of same sex parent & believes they are jealous of them. This is during phallic stage of development
What are neurosis?
The reliance upon primitive defenses cause this.

Based on the age a person might get stuck in during psychosexual development
Superego
Formed through the resolution of their oedipal conflict when they ID w/same sex parent.
Life instincts
eros; deal w/survival, reproduction, and pleasure
Death instincts
They are reflections of an unconscious desire to cease to exist as a conscious entity;

they are difficult to observe b/c they are held in check by the life instincts

Free Associations - what are these?
Freud believed that the unconscious material produced by this was symbolic in nature b/c they were easier for the patient to handle the represented information in this form.

They are ways the Id would come out w/o being blocked by the superego

Bring your insides out and therapist is just there to poke it and bring it out;

The literal images of the dream. Freud looked at this and interpreted the latent content out of
Transference - how did Freud explain this?
Freud said that these are the feelings the client has for key people in real life, which they have displaced onto the therapist. They are an obstacle to treatment, but Freud did admit that they could provide insights into why clients came in.
Alfred Adler - what did he reject in Freud's theory? What did he suggest instead?
He disagreed w/Freud's emphasis on sexuality and instead though humans beings were primarily concerned/motivated by personal and social power.
What is Individual Psychology and who came up with it?
Adler came up with it. In Individual Psychology he focused on inferiority complexes and types of compensatory behaviors that people use to try and overcome them.
Who is associated w/the "Creative Self"? The "style of life"?

What are these?
Adler's primary personality constructs. These refer to the unique individuals' styles and systems of meaning. The style of life is formed around age 4-5.
What are Inferiority Complexes?
Adler believed ppl develop them around parts of themselves they feel to be inadequate. Inferiority feelings are feelings related to these and when they become overwhelming a person forms a complex
What is compensation?
This is how people respond to their sense of inferiority (Adler)
What is a Superiority Complex?
When someone feels so inferior and responds by over compensating for it

Ego psychologists emphasized this; it is when the therapist reciprocally displaces feelings about key figures in his/her life onto the client; ego psychologists explored transference as a tool in psychotherapy but saw counter-transference as a problem
