Three drug classes

Depressants

Stimulants

Hallucinogens

Examples and effects of depressants

Depress activity of CNS (central nervous system)

Alcohol - slow down brain areas to do with judgment and inhibition and behaviour.

Opiods e.g. morphine and heroin reduce pain, emotional tension and make u feel calm

Benzodiazepines - relaxed and drowsy l, relieve anxiety

Opiods

Derived from sap of an opium poppy

Injection gives a rush of warmth and joy compared to an orgasm

The drugs attack to brain receptors that usually receive endorphins (that help reduce pain and emotional tension) (hart et al 2010) when neurons receive opiods it gives same effect as endorphins and viola

2% of those addicted to opiods are killed, usually by overdose (APA 2000)

What do stimulants do

Increase activity of central nervous system

So increase blood pressure, heart rate alertness thinking and behaviour

Most problematic legal stimulants and what do they do

Caffeine- makes people more alert and aware. Withdrawal can cause tiredness, depression constipation etc

Nicotine- one of the most addictive substances in the world (hart et al 2010) users build up a tolerance and so keep taking it to get the same effects. Withdrawal can cause irritability, strog desire to smoke, sleep disturbances (APA 2000)

Illegal stimulants what are they and what do they do

Cocaine- processed cocaine is the drug people most familiar with. It is usually snorted and taken in the mucas membrane but can be injected or smoked- usually crack is smoked. It causes rush of euphoria and if string enough can alter Conciousness. It eventually effects CNS causing increased heart rate, blood pressure, arousal, wakefulness etc.

Increases dopamine (Haney 2008) withdrawal can cause depression, extreme fatigue, sleep issues and anxiety (hart et al 2010)

Amphetamines- made in a lab. Similar to cocaine in effects but can also cause psychosis if enough. When they leave the system they cause a big let down. They also increase dopamine (Haney 2008) most common one is methamphetamine. Makes people more sexual and less inhibitions (Jefferson 2005) can cause many issues with health and very quickly addicted.

Hallucinogens

Change someone's perception so producing hallucinations and illusions. These are "trips" they can be exciting or frightening depending

LSD within two hours u are tripping. Can make things seems more vibrant, focus on details and objects seem distorted or to be moving.

The only problem is bad trips

Cannabis explain effects

THC most responsible for it's effects.todays marijuana is at least 4 times higher than in the 1970s (APA 2000)

At low doses users usually happy or relaxed though if already in a bad mood can become irritated. In high doses can cause visual experiences changes in body image and hallucinations (Matthew et al 1993)
