Anxiety disorder definition
some expression of fear &avoidance that disables/ distress
Panic Disorder PD
unexpected attacks of panic. avoid places or activities can provoke. anticipatory anxiety for the next attack.
Agoraphobia
fear and avoidance of situations where escape or help not available. Usually a response to fear that PA will occur.

often develops and accompanies PD. but can be with or with out PD.
Social anxiety disorder
preoccupied/anxiety about being scrutinized, embarrassed, rejected in social interactions Doesnt go past just these situations ( public speaking)
Generalized anxiety disorder
excessive worrying, about real things, generalized tension
post traumatic stress disorder
intrusive recollections of a trauma. phobic rxns to things assc. with it. generalized arousal.
OCD
repetitive intrusive thoughts images or impulses. ritualistic behavioral or mental acts to neutralize fear

Endocrine- hypo/hyperthyroidism, pheochromocytoma, hyperadrenalism.
what are the Dx features of PD
1- recurrent
2- unexpected
panic attacks.
3- change behavior reflecting fear.
@least 2 within a month. no obvious provoking stimulus, quick intense frightening rush of at least 4 of 13 Sx.
Sx of PD ? need 4 of 13 for Dx.
palpitations, pounding heart
Lightheaded, dizzy, faint
Trembling, shaking
Fear of going crazy/death
SOB
Chills, hot flashes
Sweating
Parathesia:numb/tingle
Derealization, depersonalizations (forget who they are)
Nausea
Feeling of choking
Chest Pain
Themes of agoraphobic avoidance
-places where escape is not readily available
- where help is not available
- danger or embarrassment could be a consequence of suffering a PA (driving parties)
who gets PD ?
more females than males, no diff in SES or ethnicity, onset usually 24 (12-54). the older the onset the more likely its medical.
social anxiety D
marked and persistant fear of social performance or itneraction in which pt feels subject to scrutiny by others. fear of negative evaluation. significant distress and disability.
social anxiety disorder onset/course
half of onsets are insidious others abrupt(during adolescence) Course is continuous, can be lifelong, may ease remit. Can emerge late in life typically with new demands ( promotions, death of partner)
PTSD
somatic cognitive affective behacioral effects of trauma. 3 domains. intrusive recollections , hyperarousal, numbing avoidance of reminders.
what do you call PTSD if < 1 mnth
acute stress disorder.
what disorder has more comorbidity than any other anxiety disorder?
PTSD ==>substance abuse, depression and other anxiety disorders.
