What is the action of Benzodiazepines in axiety pts
they attach to benzodiazepine receptors and increase the effect of Gabba(inhibitory neurotransmitter)
Name 3 Benzodiazepine (anxiolytic)drugs:

name 1 non-benzodiazepine anti anxiety medication:
1)diazepam (valium)
2)Alprazolam (Xanax)
3)Chlordiazepoxide (Librium)

4)Buspirone (Buspar)

*other 2 have been discontinued*
What 3 classes of meds treat depression
1)TCA (tricyclic anti-depressant)

2)MAOI (minoamine oxidase inhibitors)

3)SSRI (Selective serotonin reutake inhibitors)
How do TCA's exert their effects on the body?
TCA: not fully understood

though to inhibit the uptake of serotonin and/or norepinephrine by the presynaptic neuronal membrane in the CNS
How do MAOI's exert their effects on the body?
inhibits the actions of monoamine,

this prevents the inactivation of serotonin, dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine

resuts in increased levels of these 4 biogenic amine neurotransmitters
How do SSRI exert their effects?
Inhibits CNS neuronal uptake of serotonin
Name 4 TCA meds:
1)Amitriptyline
2)amoxapine
3)Clomipramine
4)Imipramine
Name 2 MAOI meds:
1)phenelzine
2)tranylcypromine
Name 4 SSRI meds:
1)Citalopram
2)Amoxapine
3)Clomipramine
4)Imipramine
Name 3 miscelanious antidepressant meds:
1)Trazodone
2)Bupropion
3)venlafaxine
How do antipsychotic medications work?
Block dopamine at teh postsynaptic receptor sites in the brain, thus increase the metabolism of dopamine

this decreases the sensory stimulation to the RAS (reticular activating system) in the brain stem resulting in sedation

acts as a antiemetic with actions on the chemoreptors
Name a antimanic drug:

how does it work?
Lithium

alters sodium transport at the nerve endings

enhances the uptake of serotonin and norepinephrine

has no sedative, depressant, or euphoric actions (makes it unique amount psychiatric drugs)
What are the 3 classes of the Sedative-Hypnotics?
1)benzodiazepine

2)Barbiturate

3)non-Barbiturate
explain the effect of benzodiazepine as i relates to the sedative hypnotic class:
acts on the hypothalamus and limbic system

this increases the arousal threshold (need more stimulation)
explain barbiturates and how they work:
used to relax pts in hospital before certain medical procedures

acts as a CNS depressant by acting on the RAS

this decrease nerve impulses to the cerebral cortex
Name 4 benzodiazepine meds for sedation:
1)flurazepam
2)Lorazepam
3)Temazepam
4)Triazolam
Name 4 barbiturates and state which ones are short acting, intermediate, and long acting
long acting:
1)mephobarbital

intermediate:
2)amobarbital

short:
3)phenobarbital
4)secobarbital
What are the 3 classes of the Sedative-Hypnotics?
1)benzodiazepine

2)Barbiturate

3)non Barbiturate

this increases the arousal threshold (need more stimulation)

1)flurazepam
2)Lorazepam
3)Temazepam
4)Triazolam
Name 4 barbiturates and state which ones are short acting, intermediate, and long acting
long acting:
1)mephobarbital

intermediate:
2)amobarbital

short:
3)phenobarbital
4)secobarbital
name 4 phenothiazines antipsychotic meds
1)chlorpromazine
2)Mesoridazine
3)Thioridazine
4)Thiothixene
Name 6 Nonphenotiazine antipsychotic meds
1)Clozapine
2)Haloperidol (Haldol) ermerg
3)loxapine
4)Olanzapine
5)Qutiapine
6)Risperidone (Risperdal)
