Factor
in ANOVA, this is an independent variable (or quasi-independent variable)
Levels of a factor
the specific conditions or values used to represent the factors are called levels
F-ratio
this is the test statistic for ANOVA. it compares the differences (variance) between treatments with the differences (variance) that are expected by chance
MS (Mean Square)
in ANOVA, a sample variance is called a mean square or MS, indicating that variance measures the mean of the squared deviations
Post hoc test
a test conducted after an ANOVA with more than two treatment conditions where the null hypothesis was rejected. the purpose of post hoc tests is to determine exactly which treatment conditions are significantly different
Between-treatments SS, df, MS
values used to measure and describe the differences between treatments (mean differences)
Within-treatments SS, df, MS
values used to measure and describe the differences inside the treatment conditions. these diffs are assumed to measure chance or error variability
Total SS and df
values used to measure and describe the total amount of variability for the entire set of data
eta squared η2
a measure of effect size based on the percentage of variance accounted for by the sample mean differences
