Displacement

Autonomy, self control and the ability to delay gratification; achieved when parents encourage and provide opportunities for independent activities

Shame- Lack of self confidence, lack of pride in ability to perform, rage against self

Occurs when independent behaviors are restricted or unrealistic expectations set the child up for failure
Erikson, 3 to 6 years
Initiative- exercise restraint, child enjoys learning and personal achievement. The conscience develops.
Guilt- To the point of accepting liability when they are not responsible. May view themselves as evil and deserving of punishment.

Occurs when creativity is stifled and parents continually expect a higher level of achievement
Erikson, 6 to 12 years
Industry- achieves a sense of self confidence through peers, develops attitudes of trustworthiness
Inferiority- can't cooperate in group activities, overly aggressive, may manipulate or violate the rights of others to satisfy his or her needs

Occurs when accomplishments are consistently met with negative feedback
Erikson, 12 to 20 years
Identity- View of the self as a unique individual, commitments to choice of career and relationships with opposite gender
Role Confusion- Goals are absent, delinquent and rebellious behavior

Occurs when discipline has been overly harsh, inconsistent, or absent. Also when there is frequent shifting of parental figures
Erikson- 20 to 30 years
Intimacy- capacity for mutual love, personal sacrifices are made for another
Isolation- withdrawal, social isolation, no career is established

Occurs when love in the home has been denied or distorted during the younger years
Erikson- 30 to 65 years
Generativity- Life goals are achieved and the welfare of future generations are considered, satisfaction
Stagnation- Lack of concern for the welfare of others, total preoccupation with self, withdrawn, highly self indulgent

Occurs when earlier tasks are not fulfilled
Erikson- 65 to death
Ego Integrity- Derives meaning from both positive and negative events, self worth and sense of dignity, does not fear death
Despair- self contempt, disgust, death is feared or denied

Occurs when earlier stages were not fulfilled
