What is abnormal behavior?
Abnormal Behavior is the act of consistently being unable to adapt and function effectively in a variety of conditions.
What is a mental disorder?
A Mental Disorder is any behavior or emotional state that causes an individual great suffering, is self-destructive, seriously impairs the person's ability to work or get along with others, or endangers others or the community.
How does abnormal behavior differ from mental disorder?
A person may behave in ways that are statisticly rare (collecting ceramic pigs, being a genius in math, committing murder) without having a mental illness. Conversely, some mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety, are extremely common.
What factors determine is some behavior or emotional state qualifies as a mental disorder?
Any behavior or emotional state that causes an individual great suffering, is self-destructive, seriously impairs the person's ability to work or get along with others, or endangers others or the community.
What is the purpose of the DSM?
The primary purpose of the DSM is to provide clear diagnostic categories, so that clinicians and researchers can agree on which disorders they are talking about and then can study and treat these disorders.
What is the advantage of using the DSM?
The DSM's categories help clinicians distinguish among disorders that share certain symptoms in order to select the most appropriate treatment.

What is generalized anxiety disorder?
Generalized Anxiety disorder is a continuous state of anxiety marked by feelings of worry and dread, apprehension, difficulties in concentration, and signs of motor tension.
How long must symptoms occur before this diagnosis can be made?
Before this diagnosis can be made symptoms must be present on a majority of days in a six month period.
What is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)?
Post-Traumatic Stress disorder is an anxiety disorder in which a person who has experienced a traumatic or life threatening event has symptoms such as psychic numbing, reliving of the trauma, and increased physiological arousal.
What are symptoms of PTSD (be able to list three)?
Typical symptoms of PTSD include reliving the trauma in recurrent, intrusive thoughts; a sense of detachment from others and a loss of interest in familiar activities; and increased physiological arousal, reflected in insomnia, irritability, and impaired concentration.
What is a phobia?
A Phobia is an exaggerated, unrealistic fear of a specific situation, activity, or object.
How do phobias differ from fears?
Phobias are an uncontrollable fear that is present from as early as birth and may or may not have a certain memory attached to it. Fears are developed when a certain situation arises and causes on fear.
What is obsessive-compulsive disorder?
Obsessive-Compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder in which a person feels trapped in repetitive, persistent thoughts(obsessions) and repetitive, ritualized behaviors (compulsions) designed to reduce anxiety.
How do obsessions differ from compulsions?
Obsessions are recurrent, persistent, unwished-for thoughts or images. Compulsions are repetitive, ritualized, stereotyped behaviors that a person feels they must do.
What is the function of compulsions in this disorder?
Compulsions are used in this disorder as a means to reduce stress and anxiety.
What is major depression?
Major depression is a mood disorder involving disturbances in emotion (excessive sadness), behavior (loss of interest in one's usual activities), cognition (thoughts of hopelessness), and body function (fatigue and loss of appetite).
How does it differ from normal sadness?
People with major depression often feel worthless and unloveable whereas healthy sad people do not have such a bleak view.
What is bipolar disorder?
Bipolar disorder is a mood in which episodes of both depression and mania (excessive euphoria) occur.
What is a manic state?
A period of an elevated, expansive, or irritable mood state. People experience an increase in energy and a decreased need for sleep. A person's speech may be pressured, with thoughts experienced as racing. Attention span is low and a person may be easily distracted.

Borderline personality disorder is characterized by intense but unstable relationships, a fear of abandonment by others, an unrealistic self image, and emotional volatility.
How does it differ from bipolar disorder?
The main difference between bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder is that with BD you get extreme sadness and euphoria but with BPD you only get sadness.
