Acting out
Unacceptable feelings and thoughts expressed through actions
Dissociation
Temporary drastic change in personality, memory, consciousness, or motor behavior to avoid emotional stress.
Denial
Avoidance of awareness of a painful reality
Displacement
Process whereby avoided ideas and feelings are transferred to some neutral person or object.

Ex. Mother yells at child bc she is angry at husband.
Fixation
partially remaining at a more childish level of development
Identification
Modeling behavior after another person who is more powerful (though not necessarily admired)

ex. abused child becomes abuser
Isolation of affect
Separation of feelings from ideas and events

Ex. describing murder in graphic detail with no emotional response
Projection
unacceptable internal impulse attributed to external source

ex. a man who wants another woman thinks his wife is cheating on him
Rationalization
Proclaiming logical reasons for actions actually performed for other reasons, usually to avoid self-blame.

ex. after getting fired, claiming the job was not important anyway
Reaction formation
a warded off idea or feeling is replaced by an emphasis on its opposite

ex. a patient with libidinous thoughts enters a monastery
Regression
turning back maturational clock and going back to earlier modes of dealing with the world.

ex. seen in children under stress and in patients on dialysis
Repression
involuntary withholding of idea of feeling from conscious awareness.

ex. not remembering a conflictural or traumatic experience
Splitting
belief that people are all good or bad at different times due to intolerance of ambiguity

ex. a patient says all nurses are cold/insensitive but that the doctors are warm and friendly
Mature: Altruism
guilty feelings alleviated by unsolicited generosity towards others
Mature: Sublimation
one replaces an unacceptable wish with a course of action that is simillar to the wish but does not conflict with one's value system
Mature: Suppression
voluntary withholding of an idea/feeling from conscious awareness (v. repression)
