turning back maturational clock and going back to earlier modes of dealing with the world.

involuntary withholding of idea of feeling from conscious awareness.

Splitting

belief that people are all good or bad at different times due to intolerance of ambiguity
ex. a patient says all nurses are cold/insensitive but that the doctors are warm and friendly |

guilty feelings alleviated by unsolicited generosity towards others

|
one replaces an unacceptable wish with a course of action that is simillar to the wish but does not conflict with one's value system
