Superior colliculus |
Does not deal with the what (perception) of the stimulus, Deals with the location (where) the stimulus is and controls eye and head movements has a major role in blind sight (20% of cells travel to SC) Responsive to visual stimuli without actually having a visual experience Eye must be Intact Controls Visual Reflex and visual tracking - Eye reflexes of blinking/dodging an incoming stimulus or moving to track (watch) a stimulus Role of Intention : Eye movements made in dark do not activate the superior colliculus suggests that intention to move the eyes is necessary for the SC cells to respond Multisensory Cells Receive sensory input from eyes & ears -> must originate from same region of space (come from same direction) respond best with the sight stimulus and sound stimulus happening at same time -> means weak visual response can be enhanced by auditory input and vice versa |
|
Lateral Geniculate Nucleus |
80% of visual cells travel here deals w/ visual experience 6 layer structure ->layers 1&2 are Magnocellular ->layers 3-6 are Parvocellular k-cells are in between the 6 layers LGN also has circular receptive fields-> surround in LGN fields have greater inhibitory effect than retinal surround |
|
Magnocellular |
Responds in the same way as M cells in the Retina |
|
Parvocellular |
have color specific receptive fields |
