Explain the Bio-Psycho-Social approach to understanding psychological phenomena from a neuroscience perspective

1. Lower = Biological - neurons, genes, neurotransmitters, and hormones

Mid = Interpersonal

Higher = Cultural

Examples of Bio-Psycho-Social Approach

Obesity:

1. Interaction of genes, metabolism, behavior, environment, culture, and socioeconomic status

2. According to Surgeon General: behavior (a physiological factor) and environment are large influences

3. Environmental (e.g. soda machines, eating "on the go", serving sizes, food availability)

Common Misconceptions

"Theory states that people evolved from monkeys and apes"

False. Theory states that we have a common ancestor (Neanderthals, etc.), not that people evolved from them.

Common Misconceptions

"Evolution means that life changed by chance"

False. Changed due to changes in the environment.

Common Misconceptions

"Survival of the fittest means survival of the best, brightest, etc."

False. Incomplete statement. Would be more accurate if it said something like "survival of the fittest for current conditions".

Fitting is an ecological niche; change the environment and they may no longer fit.

Who is best suited to survive and reproduce in a given environment.

Common Misconceptions

"The theory is just a theory and there is no evidence to support it"

False. Theory is a set of facts based on general principles.

Common Misconceptions

"The Origin of Species describes Darwin's idea on how life began on Earth"

False. Life is assumed in his book, he did not investigate its beginnings.

Basic Tenets

Evolution

Cumulative changes (at a genetic level) that occur in a population over time.

Evolution does not disprove the existence of (a) God.

Basic Tenets

Natural Selection

Advantageous characteristics increase in a population (over time) through genetics.

Often shortened to "survival of the fittest", though is not a completely accurate statement.

Basic Tenets

Organisms

All organisms are related, but they are not all ancestors of each other. All stem from "tree of life", forks separate one species from another, represent common ancestors (e.g. cousins and aunts/uncles are not your ancestors, but you are related; humans and primates are related, but not ancestors).

In nature, species do not cross breed.

Individual organisms do not evolve, the population evolves.

Darwin's Theory's Continued Prominence

1. Evolutionary psychology is a branch that applies Darwin's theory of natural selection to human and animal behavior.

2. Common behaviors across species such as attractiveness; there is a strong positive correlation between symmetry and a good immune system.

3. Memory, emotion, and personality serve key adaptive functions.

4. Logical explanations for why we have many psychological characteristics.
