Echolalia

Repeating speech of others

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Characteristics of inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, and specific learning disorder.

Specific Learning Disorder

Difficulty Reading and Writing. Performance way below that individual's IQ and education level.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Impairment in social communication and restricted patterns in behav, interest, and activities.

Intellectual Disability

Sig. deficits in cog abilities. (ID). Below avg. intellectual and adaptive functioning.

Copy Number Variants (CNVs)

Mutations that either delete genes or crete extra genes on one chromosome.

Who is ADHD more common in?

boyzzzz

Dyslexia

Individual performs way below level of someone who is their age and has the same/similar IQ, education, and cog ability.

More than 50% of school children that are classified as having a disability have what kind?

Learning disability

Childhood-Onset Fluency Disorder was previously known as?

Stuttering and Lang disorder

3 characteristics of ASD in DSM-5

1) Impairments in social comm. / interaction

2) Restricted / repetitive patterns of behav, activity, or interests

3) Impairments present in early childhood and limit daily functioning.

Levels of severity for ASD

1) Requiring Support

2) Requiring substantial support

3) Requiring very substantial support

What's prosody

Tone of voice

Ppl w/ severe ASD have trouble engaging in joint attention!

just know this pls

De Novo Mutations

Occur in father's sperm or mother's egg after fertilization (influence development of ASD)

Ppl w/ ASD seem to have fewer neurons in which brain structure?

Amygdala

Savant Skills

Extraordinary abilities that ~ 33% of ppl w/ ASD have. However, not seen w/in ppl w/ severe ASD.

Naturalistic Teaching Strategies

Used for ASD kids, enviro arranged in a way that gets child to initiate an interest and then that's used as a teaching opportunity.

Rett Disorder

Basically ASD w/ MeCP2 mutation. Still see probs w/ social comm. / interaction here BUT NO restricted/repetive patterns of behavs!! Mostly in females.

Criterion for Diagnosis for ID?

1) Significantly Subaverage Intellectual Functioning

2) Concurrent Deficits or Impairment in Adaptive Functioning (Ie scoring below 70 on an IQ test)

3) Have difficulty in things like:

- comm.

- self-care

- home living

- interpersonal / academic skills

- work

- leisure

- health

- safety etc ................

4 levels of ID (traditional classification systems)

Mild (IQ b/w 50 or 55 to 70)

Moderate (IQ 35 - 40 to 50 - 55)

Severe (IQ 20 - 25 to 35 - 40)

Profound (IQ below 20 - 25)

Levels of support for ID

Intermittent, limited, extensive, and pervasive

Classification of ID in education system

1) Educable ID (IQ 50 to 70/75)

2) Trainable ID (IQ 30 to 50)

3) Severe ID ( IQ below 30)

Causes of ID

1) Environmental: deprivation, abuse, neglect

2) Prenatal: exposure to disease / drugs in womb

3) Perinatal: difficulties during labour / delivery

4) Postnatal: infections / head injury

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

Mom drinks while baby in womb baby = feck (CHAPTER 11)

X-linked gene

Found on X or sex chromosome

What's phenylketonuria (PKU)?

Inability to break down phenylalanine. It's a form of ID

Lesch Nyhan Syndrome

X-linked disorder characterized by ID, signs of cerebral palsy (spasticity or muscle tightening, and SIB. Only males can be affected.

Down Syndrome

Most common chromosomal form of ID. Trisomy on chromosome 21. During cell division two of the 21st chromosomes bind together (nondisjunction). This creates two cells, one that dies off and the other that has three copies of the chromosome and makes a person w/ Down Syndrome).

What's amniocentesis?

Method in which fluid surrounding a fetus in the amniotic sac is sampled and tested. Down Syndrome and many other probs can be detected by this!!!!!

Fragile X Syndrome

Predominantly affects boys but can happen to girls too. Abnormality / mutation on the X chromosome. Causes guys to have severe ID, hyperactivity, short attention spans, gaze avoidance, perseverative speech (repeating same words). Physical things like big ears, testicles, and head.

Cultural-Familial Intellectual Disability

Cultural factors like neglect, abuse, and social deprivation contributing to ID.
