Five assumptions for motivation

1.) hollistic approach(the whole person, not a single part is motivated)

2.) usually complex-behavior springs from several seperate motives

3.)people are always motivated by a need- always move to another need once one is met

4.) all are motivated by same basic needs- ex need for food and water

5.)needs arranged on a hierarchy

Hierarchy of needs

Conative needs are the five needs that comprise the hierarchy

Phylogenetic needs are the (esteem/love and belonging needs) (2nd highest needs)

Prepotency needs- lowest needs such as sex food water safety

5 basic needs

1.) Physiological

2.)Safety

3.)love and belonging

4.)Esteem

5.)self actualization

Self Actualizers

Main differentiator is the B-values-motivated to maximize potential vs meet particular goals

Express B LOVE which is love without needing anything in return. Ex Ghandi

Motivated by metamotivation and show expressive behavior

Aesthetic, cognitive, and neurotic needs

(1-3)

1.)Beauty, order.... desire beautiful and orderly surroundings

2.) prerequisite for all conative needs. it is the need to know, understand.... need to know is stronger then need to understand

3.) Non productive, unhealthy

result from not meeting a basic need

Maslow on the 6 dimensions

(1-3)

1.) free will and determinism- self actualization correlates with free choice whereas safety needs correlate with determinism.

2.)Nature vs nurture- Maslow felt these factors went hand and hand. when you self actualize you have a balance of biological and social factors in life

3.) Causality vs teleology- Teleology because people aim toward self actualizing. People motivated by metamotivation

6 dimensions cont....

(4-6)

4.) Uniqueness vs similarities- uses both because Maslow says all people have potential to have motivation to push to self actualization

5.) optimism vs pessimism generally optimistic, but he sees the potential evil in everyone. Evil stems from not meeting a basic need

6.) conscious vs unconscious. Leans more towards conscious. he felt that we are aware of a need to self actualize. the first 2 stages of the hierarchy are unconscious

How would the dynamic theory be applied in a therapy setting?

A therapeutic relationship between patient and therapist is established to help patient find a way to meet basic needs and to reverse his or her jonah complex. help clients accept their b values
