Name the four general research designs?

1. Anecdotal evidence

2. Case studies

3. Decorative studies

4. Experimental

A form of Research Design based on public opinions and casual observations. Poorly supported.

Anecdotal Evidence

A form of Research Designs which focuses on an in-depth analysis individual or a small group of individuals. This is often used during rare occurrences.

Case Studies

A form Research Design that utilizes interviews and questionaires to describe a group. It is able to suggest hypotheses but cannot test them. This is the most common method of Research Design

Descriptive study

A form of research designs that utilizes the control of independent variables to measre a dependent variale. This is the only type of research design that can determine cause and effect

Experiment

Experimental Research Designs are separated into what two categories?

1. Between-Subject Design: Experimental design utilizing two or more randomly assigned groups to test a hypothesis.

2. Within-Subject Design: Experimental design which requires the subjects to act as their own control.

Which Research Design is the least reliable in terms of dependability

Anecdotal Evidence

What are the limitations of case studies?

1. Takes a lot of time

2. Few participants available

3. Can't answer all the questions

4. Often data obtained through 2nd hand sources.

Which of the following Random Designs is the most common?

Descriptive Study

The variable that is manipulated by the experimenter

Independent Variable

The variable that is measured by the experimenter

Dependent Variable

A psychologist examined how different amounts of food reward affected the frequency of bar pressing by rats. What is the IV and DV?

1. IV: Reward

2. DV: Frequency of bar press

A behavioral neuroscientist examines the effects of a drug on maze running performance in 10 female rats that came from strain of animals bred for efficient spatial learning and memory. What is the IV and DV?

1. IV: Drug

2. DV: Maze running performance

An applied psychologist tested whether different computer screen displays influenced productivity in office workers. What is the IV and DV?

1. Computer screen

2. Productivity

What is the difference between Between-subject designs and Within-subject design?

Between-subject design involves two or more subject groups while within-subject design involves just one subject group acting as their own control

What is the ABA Reversal Design?

A method of Within-subject design that follows a no treatment - treatment - no treatment schedule.

What is one of the major drawbacks to experimental designs?

Experiments demand control in order to obtain reliable data, but with increased control comes a loss of realism. So the more the control the experiment is under the less relatable to real-life situations.

What are some of the problems with using human participants for testing

1. Varied backgrounds and experiences

2. Linguistic processes complicate investigations

3. Prone to influence of demand characteristics

What are the reasons for animal research?

1. Possible to control the influence of heredity

2. Possible to control the participants learning

3. Possible to do research that would be unethical with humans

What kind of objects can be made about animal research?

1. Results tell us nothing about people

2. Has no practical value

3. Ethical issues

4. Unnecessary because we could use computer simulations
