Psychology - General Psychology Week One History and Overview of Abnormal Psychology Individual Assignment: Historical Perspectives of Abnormal Psychology Prepare a 700- to 1,050-word paper in which you examine the field of abnormal psychology. Address the following items: Briefly examine the origins of abnormal psychology. Include challenges to defining and classifying normal and abnormal behavior. Provide a brief overview of how abnormal psychology has evolved into a scientific discipline. Briefly analyze the psychosocial, biological/medical, and sociocultural theoretical models related to the development of abnormal psychology. Format your paper according to APA standards. Discussion Questions: As discussed in your Week One readings, abnormal behavior cannot be defined without considering the continuum between normality and abnormality. However, it is difficult to draw the line between what is normal and what is abnormal. One of the things that blur the line is the media. How has television, including reality television shows, sitcoms, dramatic presentations, and news reporting, impacted our concept of normalcy? As discussed in your Week One readings, one of the important concepts in abnormal psychology is the distinction between normal and abnormal. To further explore this concept, I would like for each of you to identify at least five well-known individuals in government, religion, entertainment, and/or sports that you consider to be “normal” and five that you consider “abnormal.” In your response, be sure to explain why you classified each individual as normal or abnormal. How do you define normal and abnormal behavior? What factors influence your definition? Why? Week Two Anxiety, Mood/Affective, Dissociative, and Somatoform Disorders Individual Assignment: Anxiety, Mood/Affective, Dissociative, and Somatoform Matrix and Paper Create a matrix in which you discuss the following items: Define the major Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM IV-TR) categories of anxiety, mood/affective, dissociative, and somatoform disorders. Examine the various classifications of anxiety, mood/affective, dissociative, and somatoform disorders. Prepare a 700- to 1,050-word paper, based on your matrix, in which you analyze the biological, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral components of anxiety, mood/affective, dissociative, and somatoform disorders. Format your paper according to APA standards. Learning Team Assignment: Defining Abnormality Paper Select at least three of the following challenges in defining and classifying normal and abnormal behavior: Situational context Culture Ethnicity Historical relativism Politics Evolving theory of knowledge Gender and sexual preferences/practices Mind/body Age Religion Vocations Other Prepare a 1,050- to 1,400-word paper in which you explain your selected challenges. In addition, explain how classification of abnormal behavior can vary widely based on situational factors. Format your paper according to APA standards. Discussion Questions: As discussed in your Week Two readings, in order to develop cognitive explanations of psychopathology, cognitive theorists focused on the roles of different concepts, including cognitive distortions. What is the relationship between cognitive distortions and cognitive interventions? I would like you to identify a type of fear-phobia. Then based on your selected fear, answer the following questions: How could a person develop this fear? Could this fear arise in some other way? Can such fears be explained through principles of classic conditioning? If so, how? If not, why not? What is an example of a somatoform disorder? What role does nature and nurture play in the development of this disorder? Week Three Eating, Substance Abuse, Impulse Control, Sex/Gender/Sexual, and Personality Disorders Individual Assignment: Eating, Substance Abuse, Impulse-Control, Sex/Gender/Sexual, and Personality Disorders Matrix and Paper Create a matrix in which you address the following items: Define the major DSM IV-TR categories of eating, substance abuse, impulse control, sex/gender/sexual, and personality disorders. Examine the various classifications of eating, substance abuse, impulse control, sex/gender/sexual, and personality disorders. Prepare a 700- to 1,050-word paper, based on your matrix, in which you analyze the biological, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral components of eating, substance abuse, sex/gender/sexual, impulse control, and personality disorders. Format your paper according to APA standards. Discussion Questions: Can sex be abnormal between consenting adults? Why or why not? Do you believe that passive-aggressive behavior is sometimes encouraged in business, government, and family life? Why or why not? Does society encourage maladaptive behavior? Explain your answer. Week Four Schizophrenia, Psychosis, and Lifespan Development both childhood, adult, and old age. Individual Assignment: Schizophrenia and Psychosis and Lifespan Development Matrix and Paper Create a matrix in which you address the following items: Define the major DSM IV-TR categories of schizophrenia, psychosis, and lifespan development. Examine the various classifications of schizophrenia, psychosis, and lifespan development. Prepare a 700- to 1,050-word paper, based on your matrix, in which you analyze the biological, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral components of schizophrenia, psychosis, and lifespan development. Format your paper according to APA standards. Discussion Questions: Over the years there have been numerous movies depicting the life events of people with schizophrenia. However, the “Hollywood” depiction of schizophrenia and the reality of everyday life for those with the condition are often very different. Over the course of the next few days if possible, I want everyone to watch a movie or television show that presents a character reported to have schizophrenia. While you watch, take note of how the person and their condition are portrayed. If you need to you may use a movie previously watched. Consider how those depictions compliment or contradict the description of schizophrenia presented in the textbook. Post a reply to this message summarizing your thoughts on the differences between what you saw in the film and what you read in the text. As discussed in your Week Four readings, many of the criteria used to identify abnormal behavior among adults are problematic when used to identify abnormal behavior among children. With this in mind, what factors should be considered when trying to identify abnormal behavior among children? Are there any childhood behaviors that can be considered abnormal regardless of age? What are the differences and similarities between Schizophrenia and Dissociative Identity Disorder? Week Five Professional Issues in Abnormal Psychology Individual Assignment: Case Study Select a famous or infamous person, living or dead, that has or had a psychiatric diagnosis to base a Case Study on. Obtain instructor approval of your selected case study prior to beginning this assignment. Prepare a 1,050- to 1,400-word analysis of your selected case in which you address the following items: Provide a brief overview of your selected individual giving pertinent historical background including symptoms, treatments, and outcomes. Explain the biological, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral components of the disorder analyzed in your selected case. State your case for the diagnosis. Format your paper according to APA standards. Learning Team Instructions: Practical Applications Presentation Review the objectives from Week Four and analyze additional insights and questions that may have arisen. Prepare a 10- to 15-minute presentation accompanied by 10- to 12-PowerPoint® slides, in which you analyze the application of abnormal psychology. Online Campus students must submit a 10- to 12-slide PowerPoint® presentation with presenter’s notes. Address the following in your presentation: Identify two licensed professional groups in the field of abnormal psychology such as psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, psychologists, social workers, marriage and family therapists, and pastoral counselors and examine how these professionals utilize the concepts of abnormal psychology. Analyze the legal and ethical issues related to licensed and unlicensed professionals in the field of abnormal psychology. Explain how the concepts of abnormal psychology can be applied outside the therapeutic environment such as business, education, family life, and social settings. Discussion Questions: As the class winds down, I want everyone to have an opportunity to get clarification about any topics covered in this course that you may still have questions about. I want each of you to ask a question or create your own discussion question (DQ) about any topic covered in the course that you need clarification on. How should society deal with delinquent children and adolescents? What is the impact of psychosis and schizophrenia on families?
