Meninges

Membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. Singular = Meninx

Dura Mater

Outer most layer, toughest and adheres to skull and arachnoid mater for brain. Adheres to spinal cord and vertebral column in spine.

Arachnoid Membrane

Middle layer and binds dura and pia mater together with arachnoid trabeculae.

Pia Mater

Closely contours brain and spinal cord. Aids in secretion of and containment of cerebrospinal fluid.

Central Nervous System

Division of nervous system in skull and spine

Peripheral Nervous System

Division of nervous system located outside skull and spine

Somatic Nervous System

Part of PNS that interacts with external environment. Associated with voluntary movement.

Autonomic Nervous System

Involuntary nervous system. Regulates systems outside of conscious control such as digestion.

Sympathetic Nervous System

Autonomic motor nerves that project from the CNS in the lumbar and thoracic regions of the spinal cord. Increases energy. Fight or flight.

Parasympatheic Nervous System

Autonomic motor nerves that project from the brain and sacral region of the spinal cord. Decreases energy. Rest and digestion.

Afferent Nerves

Nerves that direct signals towards the brain such as skin telling your brain that you are cold.

Efferent Nerves

Nerves that direct signals away from the brain such as the brain telling the muscles to get a jacket.

Subarachnoid Space

Contains blood vessels and cerebrospinal fluid.

Cerebrospinal Fluid

Fills the subarachnoid space, central canal and cerebral ventricles.

Central Canal

Small central channel that runs the length of the spinal cord.

Cerebral Ventricles

4 Larges internal chambers of the brain.

Blood-Brain Barrier

Surrounds most blood vessels in the brain. Helps prevent toxins from entering the brain.

Endothelial Cells

Interior surface cells of vessels, tightly wrapped around cells.

Astrocytic End-Feet

Signals to regulate blood brain barrier.

Inferior portion in humans.

Coronal / Frontal Section

Front of the brain.

Sagittal Section

Sliced down middle of hemispheres into two halves.

Horizonal / Transverse Section

Sliced perpendicular to the body. View from the top.

Medial

Sections of the brain closer to the midline.

Lateral

Sections of the brain closer to the side.

MRI

Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Used to scan brain and show us brain's structure.
