What are the three major division of the human brain?
1. The Midbrain
2. The Hindbrain
3. The Forebrain
What is phylogeny?
The study of evolutionary relatedness
What are the main structures in the Forebrain?
Cortex, Hypothalamus, Thalamus, Basal Ganglia, and the Limbic System.
What is the main function of the cortex?
Higher order cognitive skills.
What is the main function of the limbic system?
emotion, motivation and learning.
What is the main function of the basal ganglia?
fine motor movements
What is the main function of the hypothalamus?
endocrine systems, ANS, and the 4 F's.
WHat is the main function of the thalamus?
sensory relay station.
WHat are main structures within the midbrain?
The Tectum and Tegmentum
What is the main function of the Tectum?
Superior and inferior Colliculi; sensory relay pathway.
WHat is the main function of the tegmentum?
Reticular activating system.
- Adaptive- species behaviors
- Conciousness: sleep and wakefulness
What are colliculi?
Sensory information goes through them. Depending on the type of information it will be sent to the either the superior or inferior colliculi.
What is the superior colliculi?
Visual
What is the inferior colliculi?
Auditory
What are the main structures in the hindbrain?
medulla, pons, and cerebellum.
What is the main function of the medulla?
breathing, digesting, swallowing, heart rate; cross over for sensory/motor info from periphery.
What is the main function of the pons?
bridge from the cerebellum to the cortex
What is the main function of the cerebellum?
balance, coordination, procedural learning.
How many neurons and supporting cells are in the brain?
100,00 billion neurons and (10x) more supporting cells than neurons.
Where is the motor area designated in the brain?
strip in frontal lobe.
WHere is sensory located?
dispersed throughout:
- touch/temp in somatosensory cortex (parietal lobe)
-visual info in occipital lobe
-hearing in the temporal lobe near lateral fissure
What is cerebral achromatopsia?
Damage to visual association cortex. Affects only one side of the brain and half of the world looks like black and white film. If trauma is bilateral then they have no color perception and cant remember what color looks like.
What are the two hemispheres?
Right and Left
localization of cognitive function to some extent
WHat is the right hemisphere?
visual-spatial processing, self recognition and semantic knowledge.
What is the left hemishpere?
language, skilled movements and pattern recognition.
Is it true you are only left brained or right brained?
No both hemispheres work together and are believed to compliment each other.
What are split brain patients?
patients with one damaged hemisphere that hinders the hemispheres ability to communicate with each other. Stimulus is sent only to one hemisphere.
How are our bodies organized?
Contrallaterally. Right hemisphere controls motions on the left and vice versa.
