Personality Trait
Consistent personality across different contexts.
Personality Disorder
Enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that: deviates from the norm in cognition, affectivity, interpersonal functioning and/or impulse control; pervasive/inflexible; onset in adolescence/early adulthood; stable across time; and leads to distress/impairment.
Cluster A
Viewed as odd, quirky, or eccentric - possible link to psychotic disorders. Includes Paranoid, Schizoid, and Schizotypal Personality Disorders.
Paranoid Personality Disorder
Pervasive suspiciousness of others; Fears info will be used against them; Questions loyalty; Suspects infidelity; reads into things negatively; quick to rebut angrily.
Schizoid Personality Disorder
Pervasive pattern of social detachment and restricted emotional expression; Lack of desire for relationships; neutral with praise/criticism; lack of enjoyment; general lack of emotionality; prefers isolation.
Schizotypal Personality Disorder
Interpersonal deficits and eccentric behavior; Suspiciousness/paranoia; inappropriate emotional expression; abnormal beliefs; odd thinking/speech.
Cluster B
Behaviors viewed as exaggerated, inflated, dramatic, emotional, or erratic. Includes Antisocial, Narcissistic, Borderline, and Histrionic Personality Disorders.
Antisocial Personality Disorder
Pervasive pattern of disregard for and violation of rights of others; Failure to conform; At least age 18; Irresponsibility and disregard for others safety; lack of remorse; impulsivity.
Narcissistic Personality Disorder
A pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and lack of empathy; Belief self is special; exploitation of others for personal ends; envy; arrogant.
Borderline Personality Disorder
Pervasive pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships, self-image, affective states, and marked impulsivity that is present in a # of contexts; inappropriate irritability; recurrent suicidal behavior; chronic empty feelings.
Histrionic Personality Disorder
Pervasive pattern of excessive emotionality and attention seeking; using physical appearance to get attention; think relationships are more intimate than they are; superficial emotion expression; extreme emotionality; uncomfortable when not the center of attention.
Cluster C
Behaviors marked by considerable anxiety or withdrawal - share features of anxiety, obsessionality, or fear of independence. Includes Avoidant, Dependent, and Obsessive-compulsive Personality Disorder.
Avoidant Personality Disorder
Pervasive pattern of social inhibition, feelings of inadequacy, and hypersensitivity to negative evaluation.
Dependent Personality Disorder
Pervasive need to be taken care of that leads to submissive and clinging behaviors and fears of separation.
Obsessive-Compulsive Personality DIsorder
Pervasive pattern of preoccupation with orderliness, perfectionism, and mental and interpersonal control, at the expensive of flexibility, openness, and efficiency.
PD and Comorbidity
Borderline - MDD, BN, and SUD. With the rest, it's depressive, bipolar, and anxiety disorders.
PD and Impairment
Negative impact on interpersonal relationships; Creates distress for people around them; Occupational problems and failures.
