Passive tendency, believe they cannot be successful even in situations where they are perfectly capable of success. Usually the result of early failures combined with repeated criticism and low expectations. Individuals refuse to try because they do not want to risk failing. Have no faith in power of practice or effort to improve their performance. Attribute success to luck.

Common in people who have little opportunity to make their own choices or try things on their own. Individuals may look to adults to see what to do even in situations where they know the correct behavior.
