Three types of Measurement:
Objective Tests
Projective Tests
Behavioral Assessments
Asks: Does a given test measure some characteristics in a consistent manner?
Reliability
If a test has this you should be able to give someone the same test twice with a similar outcome
Test-Retest Reliability
Taking a group of people's tests and splitting them in half and assigning them a score to each. If scores on each half are similar they are reliable.
Split-Half Reliabilitly
Asks: Is a test measuring what it is supposed to measure?
Validity
Refers to if a test adequately covers a broad range of content for a given subject
Content Validity
If a test accurately predicts future performance
Predictive Validity
Results are used to make predictions about future performance
Aptitude Tests
Measure whether material has been mastered
Achievement Tests
One of the two broad types of personality tests. No subjective scoring is required.
Objective Tests
What are the two ways to develop an objective personality test?
Rational Method and Empirical Method
Items are created based on present knowledge about the construct the test is measuring
Rational method
The goal is to create an overabundance of items of which only some are related to the construct. Then, 2 contrasting groups answer and a computer ranks items that maximally differentiate between them.
Empirical Method
A test originally intended to help psychologists determine clinical diagnosis. Scales developed empirically. Though it did not do as it was designed a new version is used and provides a wealth of information.
Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory.
Tests that contain ambiguous stimuli to which a person responds
Projective Tests
A client is asked to interpret 10 cards w/ symmetric ink blots.
Rorschach Test
Test created by Henry Murray in response to his theory that humans are motivated to engage in behavior to satisfy psychological needs. Consists of 20+ cards less ambiguous than Rorschach
Thematic Apperception Test
