The state of physical decline, in which the body gradually becomes less strong and efficient with age.
senescence
The adjustment of the body's systems to keep physiological functions in a state of equilibrium. As the body ages, it takes longer for these homeostatic adjustments to occur, so it becomes harder for older bodies to adapt to stresses.
homeostasis
A particular body weight that an individual's homeostatic processes strive to maintain.
set point
The extra capacity of the heart, lungs, and other organs that makes it possible for the body to withstand moments of intense or prolonged stress. With age, organ reserve is gradually depleted, but the rate of depletion depends on the individual's general state of health.
organ reserve
The lack of a successful pregnancy after one year of regular intercourse without contraception.
infertility
A common result of recurring pelvic infections in women. Pelvic inflammatory disease often leads to blocked fallopian tubes, which, in turn, can lead to infertility.
pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
A technique in which ova (egg cells) are surgically removed from a woman and fertilized with sperm in the laboratory. After the original fertilized cells (the zygotes) have divided several times, they are inserted into a woman's uterus.
in vitro fertilization (IVF)
The collective name for the various methods of medical intervention that can help infertile couples have children.
assisted reproductive technology (ART)
The ratio of a person's weight in kilograms divided by his or her height in meters squared.
body mass index (BMI)
A serious eating disorder in which a person restricts eating to the point of emaciation and possible starvation. Most victims are high-achieving females in early puberty or early adulthood.
anorexia nervosa
An eating disorder in which the person, usually female, engages repeatedly in episodes of binge eating followed by purging through induced vomiting or use of laxatives.
bulimia nervosa
A condition of drug dependence in which the absence of the given drug in the individual's system produces a drive - physiological, psychological, or both - to ingest more of the drug.
drug addiction
