What is a multi party system?

system in which multiple parties of differing political opinions have a chance at winning elections.

What is Proportional Representation?

an Electoral system where the percentage of a given parties electorates are reflected in the legislature. If 50% of electorate is from a certain party then roughly 50% of the legislature will be from the same party roughly

What is a Coalition Government?

Government in which multiple political parties form coalitions in order to disallow the dominance of one party over another within said coalition. This is usually because no one party can get a majority in the parliament.

What is a parliamentary system?

A system in which executive power is held primarily by a group composed of the legislature, and answer to the legislature.




Parliament is the legislature and whichever party (or coalitions of parties) has the majority in parliament

What is a responsible party system?

When parties offer clear choices to voters and are required to fulfill their promises made during their campaign should they win office.

Cons: candidate can't negotiate and come to reasonable compromises for citizens if fixed to certain party platform promised before election.

Neo-populist parties realize that they can't only focus on domestic politics




common complaints are against immigration and the EU ( ex. wants countries to bail out greece and keep markets open enough to promote free trade) but they're not necessarily right wing because they want to spend the money on social programs and reinvest in community.

Define Gender Quotas and Parity Laws.

Gender Quotas (Argentina): Sets a requirement of the election of a certain amount of minority group



Parity Law(France): Requires that a certain amount of a minority group be candidates for a specific race.

Define Economic Union.
Union composed of states with the goals to promote free trade within the group making each member more prosperous.
