intro
According to scientific research a teen needs 9 to 10 hours of sleep a night.
This then brings up the issue, should schools start later?
I'm here to talk about all the benefits such as getting a better rest, paying more attention in class, and getting better grades just from another half hour of sleep.
point 1
School kids nowadays are not getting enough sleep; lets take a look at these statistics.
280 high school students were surveyed. 78 percent were having trouble getting up in the morning, and only 16 percent were getting enough sleep each day.
After a full night sleep, you wake up, you feel refreshed, and you can take on the world.
As I quote from understandingteenagers.com “Students reported feeling less depressed or irritated during the day, health center rest visits dropped substantially.”
“Reports of daytime sleepiness dropped substantially, from 49 percent to 20 percent.”
point 2
Another point worth noting is that starting later means more sleep for students.
more sleep means being in a better mood, being more alert, and being less tired in class.
The key to learning significant materials is directly related to the degree of attentiveness: more attention; more learning. by starting later students can gain more sleep and then alertness, the change is clearly worth undertaking.
point 3
Continuing, doing better on tests can lead to a great future.
Minneapolis schools showed that there was a significant reduction in school dropout rates, less depression, and students reported earning higher grades after switching from 7:15 to an 8:40 school start. .
A better GPA can benefit the less fortunate students, they will have a better chance of getting a scholarship to a college resulting in great benefits for the future of him or her.
conclusion
Over all having a later start time in school is more beneficial than not.
Students are reporting doing better in class, feeling better in class, and being more alert in school.
without sleep can lead to depression, obesity, and having a higher chance of getting involved with drugs and alcohol. Yes its true.
Teens need these benefits such as getting a better rest, paying more attention in class, and getting better grades from just another half-hour of sleep!
