Kingdom Protozoa includes Unicellular organisms
Greek----> Proto=First

Zoa-Animals

so Protozoa= First Animals
Unicellular means they have one cell, they are single celled but they act as a complete animal, doing all basic things.
They are Eukaryotes
Meaning (True Nuclei) in Latin
It includes four groups
1. Ciliophora (Ciliated protozoa)
2. Mastigophora (Flagellated protozoa)
3. Sacrodina (Amoeboid Protozoa)
4. Sporozoa (Spore-forming Protozoa)
According to their locomotary organs.
Many live as solitary individuals, while a few live in colonies.
Solitary=Alone
Colony=Groups
Cytoplasm made of 2 regions
1.Ectoplasm: Outer, thin region with gelatinous material.

2.Endoplasm: Inner, more fluid granulated region.
Most of the species have one nucleus in the cytoplasm, others have 2 or more.
When more than 1 nuclei are present they're either monomorphic (similar) or dimorphic (not similar)
Monomorphic= One kind/type

Dimorphic=Two kinds/types
Respiration and excretion are mainly carried out by diffusion through the body surface or through the contractile vacuoles in the cytoplasm.
Contractile vacuoles control the osmo-regulation and volume-regulation of the body and they are usually found in organisms that live in fresh water.
They reproduce sexually or asexully
two groups reproduce sexually and asexually, the other two groups reproduce only asexually.
Some are parasitic and others are free living.
Free living in water (Both salt or fresh water) or in damp soil.
Some form a cyst under unfavorable conditions and secret a tough protective membrane around itself, however under favorable conditions, the organism excyst and become active.
Encystment: Forming a cyst

Excystment: When the organism excyst.
