Ulrich Zwingli
Leader of the Reformation in Switzerland.
John Calvin
Swiss leader of Protestantism and advocate of predestination who created theocracies in Swiss cantons(states). His ideas led to a large following in France, known collectively as the Huguenots. And in England, known as the Puritans.
John Knox
Follower of John Calvin in Switzerland. Founded the Presbyterian Church.
Jan Huss
(Bohemia) Czech priest who was burned at stake for criticizing church. Critical of transubstantiation. Predecessor to PR.
Martin Luther
German priest who initiated the Protestant Reformation with his postings of the 95 Thesis. Followers called Lutherans, predominately found in Germany & Scandinavia. Key Ideas: sola fide; sola scripture; priesthood of all believers.
John Wycliffe
(England) He felt that Church corruption limited the ability of the clergy to properly lead Christians towards salvation. Proclaimed that a person did not need the church and its sacraments to attain salvation. (Created first English bible) Followers called Lollards.
Girolamo Savonarola
(Florence, Italy) He launched a crusade against immoral society and abuses within the Church. He accused the Vatican and encouraged the book burning of secular books.
