What was the point of the Selma campaign 1965? |
only 23 of half black population registered to vote. MLK organised campaign over disenfranchisement knowing the sheriff would react with violence. Ensured campaign was non violent, sought to elicit white violence to get voting act through Congress. |

What were the results of selma? |
King led people to vote, violent whites attacked people with venomous snakes, a youth was shot whilst protecting his mother. King arrested and wrote emotive letter from jail that was published in the New York times. |

What was bloody Sunday? |
After the Selma campaign the SNCC and SCLC organised a March from Selma to Montgomery, state troopers attacked marches, made world wide headlines. |

What did the voting rights act 1965 grant? |
Disallowed literacy and knowledge tests that prevented black people from voting, federal registrars established to decrease power of southern whites. Black voting drastically increased. |

Housing poor, white prejudice and poverty made it difficult to move. |

Black mobs crying long live Malcom X set fire to several blocks of stores. MLK saw this as a class revolt. |

MLK wanted to draw attention to condition of ghettos. He moved his family into Chicago ghetto and organised marches and protests in the local community. |

Charmichael more radical, chanted "black power" at meredith March where as kings followers chanted "freedom now" Carmichael suggested non-violence when faced with violent whites was foolish. |
