Transcription

1) Double stranded DNA unzips

2) Free RNA nucleotides align opposite one of the strands

3) Nucleotides bond (condensation reaction; bond = phosphodiester)

4) mRNA moves out of the nucleus into the cytoplasm

Translation (pt1)

5) The mRNA attaches to the surface of the ribosome

6) The first codon exposed on the ribosome is the start codon, AUG

7) The tRNA with the complementary codon UAC bonds to the codon. Each tRNA has a specific amino acid attached

8) The next codon faces the binding site. This codon attracts the tRNA amino acid complex with the complementary anticodon

Translation (pt2)

9) A peptide bond forms between the two amino acids. The ribosome moves along the mRNA to reveal a new codon at the binding site

10) The first tRNA returns to the cytoplasm

11) The process continues and a polypeptide chain forms

12) The ribosome reaches a stop signal and the process is complete
