Progressive Movement
The Progressive era was a political movement that addressed ideas, impulses, and issues stemming from the modernization of American society. Emerging at the end of the nineteenth century, it established much of the tone of American politics throughout the first half of the century. Progressives varied on how to intervene and reform. The progressivism grew with the faith in knowledge, the principles of natural and social sciences, and a modernized government.
John Dewey
An American philosopher and educator who was a founder of the philosophical movement known as pragmatism, a pioneer in functional psychology, and a leader of the progressive movement in education in the United States.
Scientific management
Also known as Taylorism, it was an early 20th century school of management thought concerned primarily with the physical efficiency of an individual worker. Based on the work of the US engineer Frederick Winslow Taylor (1856-1915) who in his 1911 book 'Principles Of Scientific Management' laid down the fundamental principles of large-scale manufacturing through assembly-line factories. It emphasizes rationalization and standardization of work through division of labor, time and motion studies, work measurement, and piece-rate wages.
Ida Tarbell
She was known as one of the leading "muckrakers" of her day, work known in modern times as "investigative journalism." She is best-known for her 1904 book The History of the Standard Oil Company.
Seventeenth Amendment
This amendment lets the people from each state elect their state's senators. Prior to this, Senators were appointed by the state legislature, which could be manipulated. Passed during the Progressive Era during the election of 1914.
Theodore Roosevelt
He sought to reclaim the presidency in 1912 as the head of the Progressive Party. served as the twenty-sixth president of the United States from 1901 to 1909. Waged legal battles against economic monopolies and trusts.
The Jungle
Written by Upton Sinclair. The Jungle raised a public outcry against the unhealthy standards in the meatpacking industry and provoked the passage of The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906. Showed the evils of capitalism.
Trust busting
Refers to government activities designed to break up trusts or monopolies. President Theodore Roosevelt's policy of prosecuting monopolies, or "trusts," that violated federal antitrust law.
Elkins Act
1903 - Congress sought to strengthen the power of the Interstate Commerce Commission to set maximum railroad freight rates. The act required railroads to hold to their published rates and forbade rate cutting and rebates. Railroads favored the act, because it prevented loss of revenue.
Hepburn Act
passed by Congress to increase the authority of the Interstate Commerce Commission over railroads and certain other types of carriers. It authorized the commission to determine and prescribe just and reasonable maximum rates, establish through routes, and prescribe and enforce uniform systems of accounts.
Pure Food and Drug Act (1906)
Created the Food and Drug Administration, which was entrusted with the responsibility of testing all foods and drugs destined for human consumption. It required for prescriptions from licensed physicians before a patient could purchase certain drugs. It required for label warnings on habit-forming drugs.
Meat Inspection Act
A United States federal law that authorized the Secretary of Agriculture to inspections and condemn any meat product found unfit for human consumption. Unlike previous laws ordering meat inspections which were enforced to assure European nations from banning pork trade, this law was strongly motivated to protect the American diet.
Sixteenth Amendment
Ratified on February 3, 1913, it exempted income taxes from the constitutional requirements regarding direct taxes, after income taxes on rents, dividends, and interest were ruled to be direct taxes in Pollock v. Farmers' Loan & Trust Co.
Eugene U. Debs
Led the Socialist Party. Allowed it to grow in the Progressive Era, especially in 1900-1914. He wanted to change the structure of the economy, but there were disagreements to the extent of the change and the tactics to use.
Federal Reserve Act (1914)
Created the first permanent national central bank, the Federal Reserve System
Clayton Anti Trust
Approved in 1914, it expanded the government's role in regulating business and helped to set the foundation for most of the regulation of business competition with which we're familiar today.
Federal Trade Commission (1914)
It created a new government agency, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), a five-member board with broad authority to regulate unfair and deceptive business practices.
Niagara Movement
The Niagara Movement was founded at Niagara Falls in 1905 under the leadership of William Du Bois. The group drew up a plan for aggressive action and demanded: manhood suffrage, equal economic and educational opportunities, an end to segregation and full civil rights.

Had a message of self-improvement over long-term social change.
W.E.B. Dubois
In the 1900s, the new Niagara Movement was led by WEB Du Bois. De Bois was the author of the 1903 book, The Souls of Black Folk. He called for immediate civil rights and the right to a professional education.
NAACP
In 1909, the African Americans joined with the supportive white progressives to form National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or the NAACP. They used federal lawsuits in pursuit of equal rights.
