What is Hypoxia?
State of oxygen deficiency in the body negatively impacting the brain and other organs
Where does Hypoxia occur? and what are the symptoms?
- From 12,000 ft
- Judgement, memory, coordination, dizziness and sense of well being
- Deterioration in night vision can occur from 5,000 ft
What factors can make a pilot more susceptible to hypoxia?
- Carbon monoxide
- Lowered hemoglobin
- Medication reducing the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood
- Small amount of alcohol, and certain drugs
- Extreme heat and cold
- Fever
How to avoid hypoxia?
Use supplemental oxygen above 10,000 feet during the day and 5,000 ft at night
What is hyperventilation?
Abnormal volume of air breathed in and out. Happens subconsciously when in a stressful situation
What are hyperventilation symptoms?
- Suffocation, tingling in extremities,
Can cause uncoordination, disorentiation, muscle spams
Finally unconsciousness can occur
How to reverse hyperventilation condition?
- Reduce depth and rate of breathing
- Breathing in and out a paper bag
What is carbon monoxide poisoning?
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless
Reduced ability of the blood to carry oxygen
How does carbon monoxide poisoning happen, and what symptoms should a pilot be alert for?
- Using the heater white exhaust fumes are escaping through manifold cracks and seals .
- Detect the odor of the exhaust or experience headache, dizziness while using the heater
What action to take is suspecting carbon monoxide poisoning?
- Shut off the heater
- Open all air vents
Cause of motion sickness?
brain receiving conflicting messages about the state of the body
What actions to take against motion sickness?
- Open air vents
- Loosen clothing
- Use supplemental oxygen
- Keep eyes on a point outside the airplane
What is ear block?
Difference in pressure between the middle ear and the aircraft cabin.
Happens especially during descents, popping the ear can be difficult, creating pain
Regulation about alcohol?
- No alcohol 8 hours before flying
- No more than .04%
- 12 to 24 hours bottle to throttle
What regulations and common sense apply regarding drugs and medication?
- Not taking medication that may affect flight safety.
- No medication except if accepted by FAA
Effects of nitrogen excesses during scuba diving upon pilot or passenger in flight in flight?
- Allow the body sufficient time to rid itself of excess nitrogen absorbed during diving
- If no, decompression sickness can occur at low altitudes

Flight up to 8,000ft:
- Wait at least 12 hours or 24 hours is controlled ascent was used

Flight up above 8,000ft:
- Wait 24 hours
