God delights in using...
the insignificant, unknown, and the unimportant. Such is the story behind the Prison Epistles
The reason we have the Prison Epistles is not because
the great apostle Paul but because of a humble, unknown pastor. Most people don’t even know his name
His name: Epaphras
The back story of the Prison Epistles is found in Acts 19
Acts 19–( 2nd missionary journey)- Paul realizes Ephesus’ significance
-(3rd missionary journey)- Paul spent 3 years in Ephesus- (longest stay anywhere) Acts 19:10
Epaphras came to Christ because of
Paul’s preaching in Ephesus. Epaphras went back to his home and started a Church in Colossae.
Colossae was in the
Hycus Valley- 100 miles N.E of Ephesus
There are 3 main cities there: Colossae, Laodecia, and Hieropolis (Col 4:12-13)
Paul had not been to Colossae (Col 2:1) So who started the church as Colossae?
Epaphras (Col 1:6-7)
Where is Paul now?
Later Paul was falsely arrested for taking a Gentile in to the forbidden areas of the temple.
Acts 23-24
Paul is incarcerated at Caesarea for 2 years
Acts 25-26
Paul appeals to Caesar
Acts 28:16, 30-31
Paul under House arrest in Rome
A destructive heresy threatened the Church at Colossae
-Epaphras went to see Paul who was imprisoned in Rome
* God used Epaphras to inspire Paul to write the Prison Epistles
An Introduction to Ephesians
An Introduction to Ephesians
For many centuries the Ancient Egyptian Language of Hieroglyphics was a hidden secret
All that change in 1799 with the discovery of the Rosetta Stone
-The Rosetta Stone has 3 languages on it Hieroglyphics, Demotic, and Greek
- Ephesians has been called
Rosetta stone of Scripture
What you need to know about God’s secrets:
•God has some secrets He never reveals (Deut 29:29)
•God reveals some secrets only to his people (Ps 25:14, Prov 3:32, Matt 13:11)
•God keeps some secrets hidden for a time but then reveals them to his people (Matt13:16-17)
A “mystery” in the Bible is
not a secret that we don’t know. It is a secret that has been revealed to us. It is not unknown to us now.
Ephesians tell us about one of the most incredible and wonderful mysteries in scripture
•The mystery was made known by revelation (3:3)
•And it was never known before (3:5)

I. Our Calling (Ch 1-3)
A prescript
v.1 –author: Paul
“an apostle” – “by the will of God”
v.1 – “in Ephesus”
– not in the earliest manuscripts, so this was probably a circular letter.
v.1- “ the Saints”
– one set apart for God’s purposes
- not holy qualities, just set apart (Ex: “holy ground”
- Every believer is a Saint
- Ex: stain glass window- one though who the light shines
v.1 “faithful
“one who doesn’t quit”
– Those who have faith in the Lord will be faithful to the Lord
v.2 “grace to you and peace”
– “grace ” - Greek greeting (charis)

-- grace always comes before peace - grace is the fount through which peace flows
I. Our Calling (Ch 1-3)
A.Our Spiritual Treasures-Ch.1
1. Praise to God for our Provision (1:3-14) *
a. The Riches we have*
a. The Riches we have *
- In the earliest manuscripts this is one sentence!
- Made of 202 Greek words Eph 1:3-14 in the longest sentence in the Bible
- “a geyser of Praise”
A Hymn of Praise
(Eph 1:3-14)
Stanza 1: …. “to the praise of his glory”
Stanza 2: …. “to the praise of his glory”
Stanza 3: … “to the praise of his glory”
A Hymn of Praise
Stanza 1: The past act of salvation (v. 4-6) – The work of the Father
Stanza 2: The present act of salvation (v.7-12)¬¬ – The work of the Son
Stanza 3: The future aspect of salvation (v. 13-14) – The work of the Spirit

All that Christ is, we have become in Him!!!
we have become in Him!!!

The Depths of God’s Grace
The Depths of God’s Grace
A.Our Spiritual Treasures- Ch.1
1.Praise to God for our Provision (1:3-14)
a.The Riches we have
b.The Reason we have them ***
1)The work of God the Father
2)The work of God the Son
3)The work of God the Spirit
1)The work of God the Father
- He planned our salvation
a) “He chose us” (1:4)
- v. 4 “chose” = eklego (Gk) – refers to the doctrine of election
- We will never fully understand the doctrine of election (Deut 29:29)
- The Doctrine of Election is something the Bible clearly teaches
Four Facts About Election
(Eph 1:4, 1Pet 1:1-2)
oWhat God Did
- “He chose us in Christ”
oWhen God Did it
- “before the foundation of the world”
oWhy God Did it
- “to be holy and blameless”
oHow God Did it
- “according to his foreknowledge”
How do we reconcile the Sovereignty of God and the free will of man?
•When two seemingly contradictory truths are held; hold both as equally true
The Doctrine of Election…
o Is given for adoration not argumentation
o For doxology not debate
o For affection not accusation
The context is
“blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ
- Ex: Love letter: “I will love me more that any other person in the world”
- Ex: The Bible teaches “ who so ever will come” and “chose in Him before the foundation of the world”
1)The work of God the Father
b) “ He predestined us”
- “predestined us” – proorizo (Gk)
- “to plan a destination before hand”
The Bible does not teach
Double Predestination
- unbelievers are “passed over” because of their unbelief
- not “predestined” to “judgment” (John 3:18)
- Election refers to ...
Predestination refers to ...
- Election refers to People - Predestination refers to Purposes
- Predestination is not fatalistic for it is done “in love” (v4)
- In love, “God has pre-planned a destiny for those He loves
What is the Destiny God has planned for us?
•Adoption in the Bible is different than our understanding of adoption
•v.5 – “adoption” = huiothesia (Gk)- “to son-place”- to chose as an inheritor
•The moment we believed we were not only regenerated we were adopted
•Regenerated- “son- making’
•Adopted – “son- placing” (Rom 8:17)
Why Did God Predestine us to Adoption?
•It was “according to his good pleasure” (v.5)
•God determines us under sheer delight
1) The work of God the Father
c) “he accepted us in the beloved”
Who is the Beloved?
•It’s Jesus. He is the Beloved One
• The love He has for Jesus he has for you
2) The work of God the Son
a) we have redemption
b) we have revelation
c) we have/ are riches
a) we have redemption
•redemption- aploltroo (Gk)
- v.7 “to buy and release a slave” (John 8:34, Rom 7:14)
•“through his blood (Ps 49:8, 1 Cor 6:19, rev 5:8-10, 1 Pet 18-19)
•Forgiveness - aphiemi (Gk)
- “to send away” – Scapegoat (Ps 103:12)
•“the riches of his grace”
- grace = charisI (Gk) – “a gift”
b) we have revelation
- “He made known to us the mystery of his will
- Mystery: Jesus has made known to us the secret of “reconciliation” (v 10). That Jew and Gentile can be restored to right relationship
c) we have/ are riches
- we have riches in God
- We are God’s Riches (Deut 32:8, Ex 19:5, 1 Pet 2:9)
3) The work of God the Spirit
a) He regenerates us (1:13b)
b) He seals us
c) He assures us
a)He regenerates us (1:13b)
- (John3:5-6, Titus 3:5)
b) He seals us
-sealed- sphragizo (Gk) – “a mark of ownership” –branded (2 Tim 2:19, Rom 8:16)
c) He assures us
-“guarantee” / “pledge” – arrobon (Gk) – “a deposit, down payment”
- Non-refundable deposit- God would sooner loose the Holy Spirit that loose you and me

- Know = epinosis (Gk) – deep personal knowledge
- It is possible to know about God and not know Him
- Is it possible to want things from God, but not want God himself
b. To know God’s plan (v18)
•“the hope of his calling’
-“called’ = “chosen”
-Rom 8:28, 1 Thess 5:24, Phil 1:6”
•“the riches of his inheritance”
- (Eph 1:5,11 Rom 8:16-17, 1 Pet 3-4)
c. To know God’s Power (vs 19-23)
1) Its Descriptions (1:19)
2) Its Demonstrations (v 20-23)

c. For our Revelation
(1)The Perception of the Secret (3:1-6)
(2)The Preaching of It (3:7-9)
(3)The Purpose of this Mystery (3:10-11)
(4)The Privilege of It (3:12-13)
(1)The Perception of the Secret (3:1-6)
Paul – a “prisoner of Christ” [1 Cor. 4:1]
“stewardship”  oikonomia – “trusted manager” [of the mysteries]
1 Pt. 4:10 – calls us stewards
“mystery”  musterion – “opened secret”
“revelation”  apokalupsis – “infallible truth”
(2)The Preaching of It (3:7-9)
“minister”  diakonos – “servant”
Ex: Camp Crestview dean, directors, etc that serve on the last night. For Paul – “God put food on my tray and told me to serve it.”
Paul did not choose to be a table waiter (server), God set him aside for it!
Two-Fold Job of Ministry:
1 “to preach” the riches! (3:8b)
2 “to make known” the secret! (4:1b)
(3)The Purpose of this Mystery (3:10-11)
“mani-fold” – multi-colored / multi-faceted - this is how wise God is…
He shows this wisdom by the church, to the rulers/authorities in the heavenlies (angles – specifically holy angels)
*God made known this mystery so he could take the church to show the multi-colored wisdom of God to the angels
*Holy Angels live to give God glory – the church fuels angelic praise!
(4)The Privilege of It (3:12-13)
Cross Ref: Eph. 2:18; Heb. 10:19; Heb. 4:16
We have access to the throne!
 Story of soldier and Abraham Lincoln’s son – if Lincoln would do that for his son, what would God do for His?!
Jesus is walking straight to the throne of grace for you requesting to His father on your behalf - what is your response?
Gentiles
- Some people thought that the only reason God created Gentiles was to provide fuel for the fires of Hell!
- That Gentiles/Jews could not only get along but be equal inheritors and part of one body is mind blowing!
- You may get used to the idea of going to church but the heavens don’t. REMEMBER where, what and who you were!
Why Holy Angels Praise
In Creation - the Power of God (Job 1)
In the OT - the Mercy of God (watching patience with the Israelites)
At Calvary - the Love of God
In the Church - the Wisdom of God
*The Church is “God’s University for Angels”
In the Classroom of God’s Universe…
God -the Teacher
the Angels - the students
the Subject -God’s manifold wisdom
the Church - the illustration
v. 11 – God planned to make the church a university for angels
since the foundation of the world!
**Salvation is not just about you – there is a cosmic purpose!

b.The Petitions (3:16-19)
c. The Praise(3:20-21)
a.The Posture (3:14-15)
“bow my knee” – a Jew would only kneel if it was something urgent! They usually prayed standing with palms up.
Note: Paul doesn’t kneel in his previous prayer. So this one must be important!
Four Key Postures In Ephesians
Eph 1-2 - Sit
Eph 3 - Kneel
Eph 4-5 - Walk
Eph 6 - Stand
Though every text is important, some are
some are more important than others!
The church fathers called these crucios locus – “crucial location”
Eph. 3:14-21 is a crucious locus

b.The Petitions (3:16-19)
(1) Inner Change (3:16b)
(2) At Home-ness (3:17a)
(3)Depth (3:17b)
(4)Knowing (3:18-19a)
(5)Fullness (3:19b)
(1) Inner Change (3:16b)
“strengthened with might by the Spirit, in the inner man” Your prayers should not be focused on the outer but inner
man!
Cross Ref: 2 Cor. 4:16; Rom. 6:11-14; Gal. 5:16
(2)At Home-ness (3:17a)
“that [result] Christ may dwell in your hearts”
Why does Paul list the H/SP first, then Christ dwelling? Does not the Bible teach that Christ must first come live in your hearts before the H/SP can come change you?
The word dwell here is different!
“dwell”  katoikeo – “settle down, feel at home”
**It is possible for Christ to be in the home of our hearts but feel at home in our hearts.
**Unless the Spirit fully controls us, Christ will not feel at home!
(3)Depth (3:17b)
“rooted and grounded in love”
– the deeper the roots, the taller a tree can grow
– deeper the foundation, the higher it can be built (Rom. 8:38-39)
**When the winds and earthquakes of life come, trace it backwards…they are not rooted because Christ isn’t at home, which is because they haven’t been changed by the H/SP in their inner man
(4)Knowing (3:18-19a)
4 Dimensions for God’s Love
Width, length, height, and depth  these were used in the ANE to explain something infinite!
4 Dimensions for God’s Love
God’s Love (Bible) (Ephesians)
-Wide Enough -To encompass all mankind (Jn. 3:16) -To include Jew and Gentile
-Long Enough -To reach from eternity past to eternity future (1 Cor. 13) -To choose us in eternity past and show us off as trophies of God’s grace in eternity future
-Deep Enough -To reach the lowest sinner (1 Tim. 1:15)-To save dead, disobedient, depraved, and doomed sinners
-High Enough To take us to Heaven (Rom. 8:39)-To seat us with Christ in the Heavenlies
(5)Fullness (3:19b)
“filled with the fullness of God”
- not becoming a little god (clearly by comparing scripture)
- It is experiencing all that God has
c.The Praise (3:20-21)
A Pyramid of Praise (v. 20)
God’s eternal purpose? – “unto Him be glory in the church both now and forevermore”
“I love Jesus, just not the church” – how can that be?! Jesus loves the church, its in his eternal purpose! It is eternal!
God is able
Almighty
Boundless
Limitless

Walk Worthy of your Calling
Walk Worthy of your Calling
Key Word in Eph 4-5

In Eph. 4:4-6, “one” is used 7x (Spirit) (Son) (Father)
One Body, One Lord, One God
One Spirit, One Faith, Father
One Hope, One Baptism,
Key Verse: Eph. 4:3
"be diligent”  spoudazo – “be swift, move fast, give utmost effort”
“to preserve/keep”  tereo – “to keep, maintain, uphold”
Note: we don’t work to create; we work to preserve. Only the H/Sp can create true
