Mimicry |
The similarity in appearance of one species to another that protects one or both |
Batesian mimicry |
Evolution by one species to resemble the coloration, body shape of another species that is protected from predators by a venomous stinger, bad taste or some other defense mechanism. |
Mullerian mimicry |
A form of protective mimicry in which two or more distasteful or harmful species closely resemble each other therefore avoided equally by natural predators |
Symbiosis? Three types? |
Situation in which two dissimilar organisms live together in close association. 1. Mutualism 2. Commensalism 3. Parasitism |
Mutualism |
A symbiotic relationship between individuals of two different species in which both species benefit. |
Commensalism |
A symbiotic relationship between individuals of two different species in which one member is benefited and the second is neither harmed or benefited |
Parasitism |
A relationship in which one organism feeds on another without immediately killing it. |
Keystone Species |
A species whose activities have a significant role in determining community structure. |
Characteristics of keystone species |
1. Plays a critical role in biological community 2. Exert there influence by changing competitive relationships. 3. Help maintain balance in an ecosystem. 4. More common in aquatic habitats than terrestrial. |
Exponential growth |
Growth without limits ( r-species) |
Logistic Growth |
Growth linked to carrying capacity (k-species) |
Diversity |
The number of different species per unit area |
Abundance |
The number of individuals of species in an area |
Primary succession |
Land that is bare of soil (a sand bar, mudslide, rock face, volcanic flow) and is colonized by living organisms where nothing was there before. |
Secondary succession |
The return of a community to pre-disturbance conditions |
