What is primary prevention?
- programs aimed at young people who have not yet tried the substance.
- teach people how to percieve drugs and the potential conseuqences.
- but must avoid giving out information that encourages drug usage.
What is secondary prevention?
- programs designed for people who have tried the drug.
- the main goal is to prevent the person from using other drugs.
- college programs fall into this category
What is tertiary prevention?
- goal is relapse prevention for people who have already experienced drug abuse.
What is considered the new continuum of care?
- includes prevention, treatment and maintenance. efforts are categorized according to the intended target population.
- universal- an entire popluation, ex a school or community
- selective- groups within the population that are deemed to be at high risk.

What is the Knowledge-Attitudes-Behavior Model?
- a prevention program in schools
- performed by police men or former users to try and scare kids into not doing drugs.
- approach is to change the knowledge of kids, which in turn with change their attitude towards drugs which in turn will change their behaviour towards the drug.
- negative effects: these programs in fact educated kids on different drugs and actually increased drug use.
- possible goal is abstinence
