Periventricular hemorrhagic infarction
aka Germinal Matrix Hemmorhagae or Intraventricular Hemmorhage
Site of origin is the is the subependymal germinal (site of neuron generation till 20 wks and glia cell production till 32 weeks)
Sensitive to ischemia (because rich is mitochondria)
Capillaries are weak and vulnerable to changes in blood flow
Periventricular leukomalacia (PVL)
Death of white matter
Due to lack of oxygen
At risk for motor disorders, delayed mental development, coordination problems, and vision and hearing impairments
May be accompanied by hemorrhage and thus cerebral palsy
Neurobehavioral Outcomes for Preterm birth
Deficits in motor and perceptual motor skills are very common
As well as executive dysfunction
Academics most often problematic in math, though sometimes in reading
Attention problems are common
Memory
Executive function and visual motor deficits great than those for language
Volumetric imaging of preterm children at age 16
Lesser gray and white matter, especially corpus callosum and cerebellar white matter
Effects of periventricular leukomalacia on later brain development
It is diffuse white matter damage
Can affect migration of fibers from germinal matrix to cortex
Affects white matter and gray matter development
Other medical complications of premature birth
Chronic lung disease
Apnea
Infection/jaundice
Nectroizing entrocolitis (death of intestinal tissue)
Retinopathy of prematurity = abnormal blood vessel development in retina of eye (eyes open at 23 weeks)
Growth in which cognitive areas lags behind in premature children
visual motor integration
pegboard
contingency naming
