When to use the Preterit?
When past actions are completed
-ar verbs
yo --> -é
tú --> -aste
el, ella, usted --> -ó
nosotros --> -amos
ellos, ellas, ustedes --> -aron
-ar examples
yo caminé --> I walked
tú caminaste --> you walked
el caminó --> he walked
-er/-ir verbs
yo --> -í
tú --> -iste
el, ella, usted --> -ió
nosotros --> -imos
ellos, ellas, ustedes --> -ieron
-er/-ir examples
yo bebí --> I drank
tú bebiste --> you drank

yo cubrí --> I covered
tú cubriste --> you covered
Exception #1
When verbs end with:
-aer
-eer
-uir*
-oir
In third person singular and third person plural forms change:
ió --> yó
ieron --> yeron
*-uir verbs are the only ones that don't gain accents with each conjugations -->
For all other endings, each form gets an accent besides the ellos form
Examples of Exception #1
Caer --> yo caí --> I fell
--> tú caíste --> you fell
(notice accent on tú form)
--> el cayó --> he fell

Huir --> yo huí --> I fled
--> tú huiste --> yo fled
--> el huyó --> he fled
Exception to Exception #1

Seguir - to follow
Only one verb ending in -uir doesn't follow traditional exceptions.
In third person (s. and p.) e --> i
yo seguí --> I followed
él siguió --> he followed

In Present tense, stem changing occurs in all forms except nosotros form (1st person plural).
Exception #2

Preterit Stem Changing Verbs
Only with -ir ending verbs, and in the 3rd person (s. and p.) is there stem changing in the preterit
e --> i
o --> u
Examples of Exception #2
Mentir --> yo mentí --> I lied (as in I told a lie)
--> el mintió --> he lied

Morir --> tú moriste --> you died
--> ellos murieron --> they died
Exception #3
Verbs ending with
-car
-gar
-zar
This exception only pertains to first person singular
-car --> -qu
-gar --> -gu
-zar --> -c
Examples of Exception #3
Tocar --> to play (an instrument)/touch
yo toqué --> I played
él tocó --> he played

Colgar --> to hang
yo colgué --> I hung
tú colgaste --> you hung

Almorzar --> to eat lunch
yo almorcé --> I ate lunch
él almorzó --> he ate lunch
