In 1954, after the Supreme Court ruled that racial segregation in schools was illegal, Eisenhower sent US troops to Little Rock, Arkansas, to help integrate the public schools. He also initiated the construction of the US Interstate Highways (designed for the transport of military troops) in 1956.
