Supplies

-tourniquet


-gloves


-blue pad (clean environment)


-alcohol swab (chlorhexidine gluconate alcohol)


-catheter (20 or 22 gauge)


-Tegaderm/tape


-luer lock/ IV connectors


-saline flush


-bandaid or cotton swab


-sharps container

Tourniquet

-place tourniquet under patients arm (about 6 inches above venipuncture)


-position in middle of arm


-do not allow to loosen


-if possible: max 2 min on


-keep as flat as possible and not too tight (may impede arterial as well as venous blood flow


-radial pulse should be palpable


-release as soon as vein has been entered

Why is it Important to Gather Equipment Prior to Initiating the IV?

-maintain sterile environment


-risk of injury


-prepared for mishaps


-establish patient rapport

Selection of a Vein

-select based on palpation and sight


-avoid valves, rolling veins, or feel hard or ropelike


*if suitable vein cannot be found, apply tourniquet closer to IV site, or use other arm

Distend Vein By?

-having patient open and close fist tightly 5 or 6 times


-flicking skin over vein with 1 or 2 snaps of fingers


-rubbing or stroking skin upward toward tourniquet
