Signal Words

  • Based on pesticide product's most significant hazard
  • typically the pesticide's oral toxicity to laboratory animals
  • DANGER, POISON, WARNING & CAUTION

Danger

  • signal word
  • Hazard Category I
  • usually used in conjunction with POISON & illustration of skull & crossbones
  • not in conjunction, usually indicates only moderate oral toxicity but especially hazardous to skin or eyes (no word POISON, no skull & crossbones)

Warning

  • signal word
  • Hazard Category II
  • used for pesticides with moderate toxicity

Caution

  • signal word
  • Hazard Category III
  • used for pesticides with low toxicity

Keep Out of Reach of Children

  • on all product labels with signal word
  • pesticide products offered for sale in the US require this phrase

Conflict with Labeling

  • pesticide applicators legally required to follow the label's instructions.
  • failure to adhere to instructions is a violation of federal & state pesticide law

Exceptions to Conflict with Labeling

  • using a lower dosage rate
  • using a lower concentration in spray tank
  • using pesticide less frequently
  • using pesticide to control pest not listed on label, provided application is to a crop/site listed on label & is not expressly prohibited
  • using application method, as long as not prohibited & all other directions are followed
  • mixing another pesticide or another fert
  • increasing the concentration of pesticide in spray tank as long as it corresponds w/ current published recommendation of U of Cal

Shall/Must

  • mandatory requirements on label
  • Ex: required use of protective eyewear
  • not following is violation of fed & state pesticide regulation laws

May

  • permissive term
  • Ex: Using product on weekly basis if the pesticide used wants to.
  • not in violation of fed or state pesticide law

Labels at Use Site

  • label must be present at use site
  • if application is being made under SLN or Sec 18, the applicator must have copies of supplemental labels in addition to regular label

  • any container, other than the original container, that's used to hold pesticides or use-dilutions of pesticides

  1. name & address of the person/firm responsible
