Restorative Surgery

Performed to improve a pt's functional ability

Example of restorative surgery

Total knee replacement, finger reimplantation

Age related changes and their effect on surgeries

Decreased cardiac output, increase bp, decrease peripheral circulation, reduced visual capacity, loss of lung elasticity, decreased 02 of blood, decrease blood flow to kidneys, decrease inability to excrete waste, decrease in glomerular filtration rate, nocturnal common, sensory deficits, slower reaction time, decrease ability to adjust to changes, increased incidence of deformities related to osteoporosis, dry with less subcutaneous fat makes the skin at greater risk fir damage, slower wound healing, increased risk for infection

Common complications of patients with obesity and surgery

Obese pt's is often malnourished because of an imbalanced diet, obesity increases the risk for poor wound healing because of excessive adipose tissue, stresses the heart and reduces the lung volumes which can affect the surgery and recovery, obese pt's need higher/larger doses of drugs and may retain them longer after surgery

Who is responsible for getting informed consent?

Surgeon
